We are headed back to London from another great Kentucky State Fair experience! A big thank you to the Laurel County Farm Bureau for sponsoring this trip and allowing us to once again attend the Kentucky Farm Bureau Picnic! Between our supportive agriculture community and our great students, days like today are awesome!

Also, a huge shoutout once again to Mallie Johnson, the 2026 KY FFA State Star in Agribusiness and 2026 SLHS FFA graduate, as her project was on display this year at the fair in Agland!

On Thursday and Friday, 6 members represented the South Laurel FFA at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville in a few state level FFA competitions. Members competed in Dairy Evaluation, Nursery Evaluation and Seed Identification.

The Dairy Evaluation team was composed of Piper Blankenship, Kayleigh Dillon, Isabella Foster and Jordynn Green. The team placed 13th.

The Nursery Evaluation team was composed of Piper Blankenship, Raelee Coots, Isabella Foster and Jordynn Green. The team placed 13th.

Finally, Zoey Roark was our representative in the Seed Identification contest.

On Wednesday evening the 2026-2027 South Laurel FFA officer team had the honor of volunteering alongside the North Laurel FFA officer team at the annual Bonnie Sigmon Farmer’s Feast at the London-Laurel Farmer’s Market. The event serves as a celebration of the year and harvest for the Laurel County Agriculture Community. Named after Bonnie Sigmon, a former Horticulture Extension Agent for Laurel County that we lost too soon in 2022, she played a pivotal role in growing the market into the successful entity that it is today. We are thankful for the support of a great agricultural community and looking forward to continuing the legacy left by Ms. Bonnie and others!

Back to back! As announced earlier this afternoon by the National FFA, the South Laurel FFA has been recognized as a national 3-star chapter for the second year in a row! Only 10% of Kentucky FFA chapters are selected to be rated nationally and a three-star rating is the highest that can be received! Our chapter will be recognized on stage at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October. Congratulations to our members for this achievement!

Night One = Huge Success

Night Two = A can't miss opportunity to see some great truck and tractor pull action and support two great FFA chapters in Laurel county!!!

Blue and Gold Truck and Tractor pull will be this Friday and Saturday at the Southeast Kentucky Fair (old Laurel County Fairgrounds) ran by the North and South Laurel FFA! New track! Well over 300’ track length! Great prize money for local classes!

Earlier this week 13 members of our 2026-2027 officer team met for the annual officer retreat.

The day started by going through the expectations, duties, responsibilities and dates for the upcoming year. We were then joined by Mr. Josh Smith, a district manager for W.D. Bryant, to discuss the importance of being an employable person.

Next, we departed from school and visited the Laurel County Extension Officer where County Director Steve Mobley talked about the opportunities provided by the Extension program.

We then headed just up the road to the London-Laurel County Farmer’s Market and learned about how that program works and the local impact from Market President, Fred King.

After a great lunch from Sauced, we traveled to Wildcat Mountain Cheese for a tour of the only dairy farm in Laurel County and their unique business model from Mrs. Clara Patton.

Finally, we ended the day by getting to tour the farm from where so much of the fresh produce at Cornett Farm Fresh comes from. Katie Cornett provided an in-depth and behind the scenes look of the business that plays a large role in making Laurel County the number one county for produce in the state of Kentucky.

Again, a huge thanks to all that made for such a great experience!
