Celebrating our longest Present Moment sanctuary resident Latke Love! This handsome little man has had quite a year medically with kidney and protein loss challenges added to his regular hydrocephalus, seizures, GI issues and blindness. At one point on spring we weren’t sure what the future looked like but Latke has made a miraculous and full recovery!

Since his last checkup and perfect lab work in July he has still been on prednisone to make sure everything was not only healed but stable. The prednisone resolved his kidney and PLE although it has had some side effects on his skin that it’s time to work on. The plan has always been to wean him off the pred asap and thankfully that time has come. We have an appointment with our fabulous internal specialist on the 21st to recheck bloodwork and start lowering his doses. The cost for his recheck and lab work is $450 which we are hopeful we can raise before his exam. Hamburger Patty & Dolly “helping” me make a cheesecake for tomorrow’s football pawty by being the ultimate clean up crew. We have a dozen friends and dogs coming over for game day and social time. Most of our dogs don’t enjoy going out to busy public places so we bring the friends and cuddles to them.

Enjoying a beautiful day and making dinner plans with Alfie & Latke. It’s been quiet and peaceful around here the last two weeks and it’s a refreshing change from our typical day to day intensity of rescue work and medical care. Grateful for the current wave of calm.

Doing things our own way. With mobility and neurological challenges, staying fit and healthy can look a little different than a typical dog’s daily routine. Adapting and creating effective alternatives is something we thrive on here at PMR.

Thank you everyone who sent recommendations for a vibration plate. We chose one that offers the things we were specifically looking for Hamburger Patty and Latke to support their physical strengthening needs. Started getting the dogs used to its sounds, motions and feelings. Latke prefers to sit on it while Sister Pat took to it right away and seems to enjoy the experience.

As we wrap up the summer we also get ready to head into fall and what incredible things lay ahead for PMR… We are beyond grateful and proud to announce that we have been chosen as a recipient for the 2026 Established Foundation grant from the Marion & Richard Graham Foundation.

This is life changing for us as an organization in terms of providing financial stability for every dog under our current care and budgeting for new medical intakes for the next year. Thanks to MRGF who has been our largest financial supporter since opening our doors in 2021, this grant empowers us to continue our work with the peace of mind that our dogs receive the best and most thorough medical care, quality of life and comfort for as long or short as they are with us.

So many rescues including us have been struggling with slow adoptions and donations while intakes and medical costs have sky rocketed. This grant means we are able to keep our doors and hearts open. That we can do this in a fiscally responsible way. That we can do it with less stress and more options. We are at the lowest number of dogs we have had in years giving more time for us to be fully present for the dogs and ourselves, giving each adoptable and sanctuary pup a full spectrum experience and focusing on doing what our unique rescue does best with medical and hospice cases from a balanced and congruent place.

Being such a small and niche focused rescue we are honored that our passion, purpose and work with these sacred animals is not only witnessed but appreciated and supported by the Marion and Richard Graham Foundation and each of you who are part of this beautiful, heart centered community.

Nonna Sophie has found her peace….

Yesterday Nonna and I came to the LA sanctuary for her vet appointment scheduled for today. I knew that her appointment was likely going to be a crossing given her decline and disorientation that has increased quickly over the last two weeks although she has been eating and drinking well and for the most part resting comfortably. We spent the afternoon calmly napping and bathing in Monty’s rainbow light. At 5:30 last night she had a 3 minute seizure that was very intense. I made the choice to take her to our after hours vet center and we had a peaceful passing, helping her mind and body rest after 19 years on earth. I did not want her to suffer or to navigate anything more in her time with us.

Nonna came to us on Christmas Eve 2 years ago after being seen and pulled for us by our friend Cynthia Cynthia L after she was surrendered at 17. Knowing her age at her initial Rescue intake we have always treated each day like a gift for Nonna. She loved her napping corners, barbecue sauce, brisket and going to get groomed by our friend Patty. She had a golden retirement at PMR living in comfort and being loved by everyone, family and visiting friends. Nonna was borderline feral so getting to connect with her and her letting you pet her was like winning the lottery. After a year and a half with us, she would finally let me pick her up and rub her on the chest sometimes but not for very long and that was OK. I just loved connecting with her….

Please enjoy the weekend love for DJ Patches! His Furever Fospice family had a glorious beach day with brother Frank and sister Hattie.

We are so grateful to have dedicated fosters and adopters for our most special pups to give them the experiences and homes every dog deserves to have.

Patches has been with PMR as a hospice case for 18 months now and thanks to the love and care he receives from his family, vet teams, the rescue and your support he is still feeling good and enjoying an incredible quality of life. Each day is a gift…

It is with the saddest of hearts we share that Hoopsi Frecklebelly crossed over yesterday. I think everyone is still in shock. Hoopsi will always be one of the most incredible Present Moment alumni of all time, up there with Wilby and Wynstann. A true rhinestone cowboy and treasure. A legend…

Hoopsi knew and shared only kindness and joy since his rescue and adoption journey started. We had the gift of his company and magic for several months before reaching out to see if Katie and Mark were interested in adding him to their family. Their experience and love for their hydro boy Ollie Katie Little Andrews made them the only choice for me to be comfortable for Hoopsi to move on from the sanctuary. They welcomed him with open arms and hearts. His life may have been shorter than most but we will always be about quality over quantity and boy did everyone that met and loved him make sure he got all the love the world had to give. And he gave it right back. You just couldn’t look at Hoops without smiling and having your heart grow a little big bigger every time.

Thank you Katie & Mark for being his people, his world. Because of you he was literally the King of his mountain. Holding you all in our hearts extra tight. Hoopsi I love you forever and ever. Thank you for sharing your magic with us.

Pancakes getting labs, urinalysis and an exam by our internal med team to see how he’s tolerating his new meds and if they are having the positive effect we hope they are. We will update everyone when all his results come in. Today’s work up is $675. Please donate towards Latke’s care if you are able with our thanks and love.

We are over the moon to announce the last of the bird babies have left the nest! The best part is Finch & Flamingo were adopted together to a beautiful family full of all the energy and activity they are used to and love.

Thanks to for sharing them in your stories- because if her help networking someone else saw the puppies and sent them on to a friend looking for a new dog. When we did our phone interview, I asked if she would consider taking both flamingo and Finch since they didn’t have other dogs and they had become quite bonded being the last two of the litter. She said yes without hesitation and we were so happy about it.

Over the weekend I drove the babies up north to Sacramento to their new home. They have a wonderful mom, three human siblings, 3 cat siblings and a bearded dragon! Everyone in the house is in love with the puppies and they are settling in quickly and living their furever home! Finch is particularly fond of his new kitty friends. We are so grateful to and family for welcoming two PMR pups with live and kindness. They truly found the perfect home and it was well worth the wait.

We’ve never had fosters this long and that came in that young to adopt out. The change in energy and lack of their vivacious presence has been noticeable but I couldn’t be happier that they are in an active and loving home where they will get so much attention and affection. Two great bonuses to my trip were meeting up with my dear friend and rescue goddess Leslie from and a visit with Hazel .916 and her mom! It was a great trip filled with and signs.
