On July 15, Virginia father Pat McAleer began an extraordinary 5,000-mile bicycle ride across America, dipping his tire in the Pacific Ocean in Washington before riding all the way to Virginia Beach, where he'll finish at the Atlantic Ocean roughly 90 days later.

Pat isn't riding for a personal challenge. He's riding for his daughter, Mary Kate, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age 10. Through Ride Pat Ride, he's raising awareness and funds to support T1D research while sharing his family's story with communities across the country.

Pat is currently in Michigan, en route to Jackson and then Detroit. To learn more about Pat or to cheer him on, please visit https://www.breakthrought1d.org/news-and-updates/ride-pat-ride-pacific-atlantic-cross-country-bike-cycling/

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL: Happy 1st day, Elias!

Elias is 10 years old and starting 6th grade this year.

He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2024 when he was eight years old. We had no family history of Type 1 and really had no idea what we were walking into. We went to the ER after weeks of symptoms that finally started adding up.

Our lives changed overnight.

All of us had to learn about insulin, blood sugar, carb counting, finger pokes, lows, highs, alarms and medical devices. It was a lot. But Elias picked up on it incredibly fast. He learned what his numbers meant, what his body was doing, and what he needed to do next. Sometimes it felt like he was learning right alongside us, and other times he was already one step ahead.

Two years later, he knows an incredible amount about his own diabetes. He wears a Dexcom and insulin pump, treats lows, watches his blood sugar, counts carbs, and knows when something just does not seem right. He is very independent, but he also knows being independent does not mean doing diabetes alone. Sometimes he needs help, and that is okay.

He still plays sports, rides his bike, goes to school, hangs out with friends, and does normal kid things. Diabetes just comes along for all of it.

Type 1 has also given Elias a voice we did not expect. He has attended Friends for Life, gone to diabetes camp, become a Breakthrough T1D Youth Ambassador, and has been on the Juicebox Podcast twice talking about diabetes from his point of view.

One thing Elias has said has always stuck with us: "Sometimes I wish I could leave all my diabetes stuff at home and just be a kid."

That probably explains living with Type 1 better than we ever could.

We are incredibly thankful for the care Elias has received through Mott and Michigan Medicine. His team has helped all of us learn how to manage Type 1 while still letting Elias be Elias.

Type 1 is a huge part of his life, but it is not all of him. He is a kid who happens to know an incredible amount about keeping himself alive, knows when he can handle something himself and when he needs help, and keeps doing the things he loves with diabetes along for the ride.

Hail, Elias! 💛🩵
