Are you interested in learning more about artificial intelligence (AI)? Join the library for “Between the Lines: AI Literacy Book Club”, on Tuesdays (Sept.8, Oct. 13; Nov. 10) at 6:30 p.m.

Doctoral student Sarah Appedu from Syracuse University's School of Information Studies returns to lead us in this exercise of critical thinking. Use banned books to explore the uses, limitations, and considerations of GenAI tools; each session's book(s) will enrich your reading list and immerse you in new perspectives. This book club is for bookworms and tech-curious folks alike!

A new month is coming and so is a new slate of programs at the Liverpool Public Library. Here’s some of what’s coming up this week!

🚶Fall Prevention 7-Week Class
Starting Wednesday, Sept. 2 • 11 a.m.
This 7-week in-person program is run by occupational therapists to educate older adults on fall risk factors and how to make modifications to decrease future falls!

This class is presented by Le Moyne's Center for Aging Resources and Enrichment in partnership with Onondaga County Office for the Aging and Long-term Care Services.

🪡Artist-in-Residence Meet & Greet
Wednesday, Sept. 2 • 4 - 5 p.m.
An opportunity to meet LPL’s Artist-in-Residence Kate Untiedt and view her artwork as she installs her pieces in the library! Kate creates needle-felted artwork, using locally sourced wool from a farm in CNY.

📖Phonics Exploration Stations
Thursday, Sept. 3 • 6 p.m.
Children and their caregivers will rotate through fun, interactive stations to practice rhyming, blending, and building words. This is the perfect way for preschoolers through 3rd graders to boost their reading skills while having a blast.

Join us this September as we welcome Artist-in-Residence Kate Untiedt, a fiber artist with more than 30 years of experience exploring and teaching a wide range of fiber arts. Her favorite medium, needle felting, celebrates the beauty of natural fibers while encouraging creativity, confidence, and personal expression.

Throughout the month, enjoy opportunities to meet Kate, watch live demonstrations, view her artwork, and create your own needle-felted projects!

Create a realistic pet, spooky monster, or imaginative creature in this fun, hands-on workshop celebrating creativity and self-expression.

Celebrate the conclusion of the residency with Kate and the community artists who created alongside her. Enjoy a special showcase of everyone's work!

Did you know you can tell what a dinosaur ate just by looking at its teeth? You can! Last week, families had a JAW-some time as they became “Dinosaur Diet Detectives”. LPL STEM Educator Katie led families through the clues they could use to tell a carnivore from a herbivore. They even got a close-up look at 3D models of actual tooth fossils from Australia.

ABOUT THE MINI ROMCON
Join the Liverpool Public Library for our first-ever Mini RomCon on Saturday, September 26! From 1:30 - 3 p.m., you can purchase books and get them signed, meet authors, and enter raffles for great prizes. Participating authors include Pip Dolyn, Elizabeth Everett, Katie Jung, M.A. Lakewood, Jo McNally, Isabel Sterling, and M. Stevenson.

Camp Liverpool went across the lake to the NYSDEC’s Onondaga Lake Visitors Center last week to explore water science. Sue Potrikus of the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps showed our adult campers how to conduct water testing to look at microbes in the lake. They also discussed the clean-up of the lake and created art using pieces of discarded Syracuse China found on the east shore of the lake.

Do you want to learn more about the lake in our backyard? On Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m., join the LPL near the Salt Museum for Lake Appreciation Day. There will be music, food trucks, STEM stations for children, story times, bird walks, and much more. Several organizations will also be there offering resources and fun. 😎55+: Summer Social
Monday, Aug. 24 • 2 p.m.
Join our 55+ Summer Social for an afternoon of classic board game showdowns and ice-cold refreshments. We’ll have the music playing and the AC humming. Come for the games, stay for the laughs! If the weather allows, we will set up co****le in the garden.

🪏Unearth a Story: Archaeology at Cerne Abbey
Thursday, Aug. 27 • 7 p.m.
Drew Calderwood presents his experience over the last three years on an archaeological dig in southern England. Drew has been working with others to locate and understand the history behind Cerne Abbey, which was built in 987 AD and taken down during Henry VIII’s reign in 1539. Calderwood has been at the dig site over July and August and will share the newest findings.
This program will also be the Adult Summer Reading Finale. Raffle prizes will be announced at the program and there will be refreshments.

🚌 The Warm Mug Historians: Syracuse Fire Department
Friday, Aug. 28 • 1:30 p.m.
Dave Reeves from the Syracuse and Onondaga County Fire Museum will give a brief overview of firefighting from the earliest days to the present, touching on the major advances that have been made and the lessons that have been learned along the way. This will include a brief history of the Syracuse Fire Department, including how the organization started and how it's evolved into what it is today.
