Kevin King was welcomed with hugs from old friends at the first stop on his Canadian farewell tour — in Winnipeg, MB. At Tuesday’s dessert night, the retiring MDS U.S. Executive Director shared memorable stories of disaster survivors and volunteers that he’d come to know over more than 20 years of service. Kevin will share more stories at evening programs in Abbotsford, BC, and Baden, ON, later this month.

Hurricane Isaias came ashore near Destin, Florida, then tore across the Gulf Coast, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas, bringing tornadoes and heartbreaking loss along the way.

Please keep the survivors and their families in your prayers as they face the road ahead.

MDS volunteers near Atmore, Alabama, are already on the ground clearing debris, and we're watching for needs in the Florida Panhandle. We're in contact with state VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) partners, and as it becomes safe, we'll be ready to help with the cleanup, repair, and rebuilding that lies ahead.

Mennonite Disaster Service volunteers locally and from Lancaster County, PA, build a bridge in the community of Iron Station, North Carolina (July 2024). The bridge helps 29 families cross the local creek that washed out the makeshift crossing on January 5th, 2024. This marked the 100th bridge MDS has built since 2015.

MDS volunteers are still in NC today doing the same thing; building bridges to bring people home.

An update on our Fall 2026 U.S. national projects:

Lahaina, Hawaii: Twelve new weekly volunteers joined twelve long-term volunteers to form our second team on site, and their week started with an unexpected twist when high winds from Hurricane Nolo blocked the route between the airport and camp. Local partners opened their home so volunteers had a place to stay for the night. Once back on site, the team painted a home a beautiful red, the homeowner's choice. At another home, the homeowner stopped by and said, "It's so big, it's so big!" By move-in day, she will have moved six times since the fire, and we are anxious to get her "home" at last.

Crisfield, Maryland: Our long-term team (volunteers serving four weeks or more) has arrived! They met with the local long-term recovery construction supervisor to visit clients, look at jobs, and sign job cards. They also cleaned and prepared the project site to welcome this season's weekly volunteers.

Thank you to everyone who came out for volunteer trainings in Winnipeg last week! 20 participated in general leadership training, 14 in construction leaders and 12 in cooks training. Participants travelled from Chugiak, Alaska to Burbank, California, Nanoose Bay, B.C., Deep River, Ontario, and from communities in between.

Amy Shrupka, a local to Winnipeg, participated in cooks training. She said, “I very much enjoyed attending the sessions. I found it so life-giving and energizing. It stirred up lots of excitement.”

We’re so glad each of you made it out and appreciate your generosity of time and skills — to projects you’ve already served on and the ones we’ll meet you on in the months and years ahead.

The remnants of Typhoon Merbok in 2022 and Typhoon Halong in 2025 struck southwest Alaska with hurricane force winds and coastal flooding that devastated dozens of remote Native communities. In partnership with Alaska VOAD members, Mennonite Disaster Service is helping repair and build new homes in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, working alongside local crews to construct new SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) houses in Chevak and Toksook Bay, Alaska. They also completed plumbing repairs in Koyuk.
