๐Ÿ“š โ€œEducation is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.โ€ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

Often attributed to W.B. Yeats, these words continue to resonate because they capture a simple truth.

The best teachers do more than pass on facts. They encourage curiosity, challenge assumptions, and inspire a lifelong desire to learn.

Knowledge can be taught, but a genuine love of learning must be sparked.

That spark can last a lifetime.

In the rugged heart of the Scottish Highlands, survival often depended on alliances rather than armies.

Among the greatest of these alliances was Clan Chattan, a powerful confederation of Highland clans that dominated much of central Scotland for centuries. Although many people speak of Clan Chattan as if it were a single clan, it was actually a federation of related and allied families. The most prominent included the Mackintoshes, MacPhersons, Davidsons, MacGillivrays, MacBeans, Shaws, Farquharsons, and several others, each retaining its own identity while fighting beneath a common cause.

Leadership traditionally rested with the chiefs of Clan Mackintosh, who served as Captains of Clan Chattan. Through diplomacy, marriage, and military strength, they held together one of the most influential political and military alliances in Highland history.

Their emblem was the fierce wildcat, a symbol chosen for good reason. Wildcats were renowned for their ferocity when cornered, and the confederation adopted the unforgettable Gaelic-inspired motto:

"Touch not the cat bot a glove."

The phrase is often misunderstood today. It does not refer to a harmless pet. Instead, "bot" means "without," making the warning clear: Do not touch the wildcat unless you are wearing a protective gloveโ€”or be prepared for its claws. It was a declaration that any attack on Clan Chattan would be met with swift and violent retaliation.

One of the confederation's most famous moments came during the legendary Battle of the North Inch in 1396.

Rather than allowing a deadly feud to continue across the Highlands, King Robert III approved an extraordinary solution. Thirty champions from Clan Chattan fought thirty warriors from their rival confederation, commonly identified as Clan Cameron, on an island in the River Tay at Perth. Before nobles and ordinary townspeople alike, the two sides fought in one of medieval Europe's most remarkable judicial combats. Nearly every participant was killed or badly wounded, and although historians still debate some details, the battle entered Scottish legend as a dramatic display of Highland honor and rivalry.

Throughout the centuries that followed, Clan Chattan fought in many of Scotland's defining conflicts. They supported Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence, clashed repeatedly with neighboring clans, and later took part in several Jacobite uprisings, where Highland loyalty to the Stuart cause shaped much of eighteenth-century Scottish history.

Despite internal disagreements between some member clans, the confederation endured because its members understood a simple truth: united, they were stronger than any single clan could ever be alone.

Today, the wildcat remains one of Scotland's most recognizable clan symbols. Although the swords have long been sheathed, the story of Clan Chattan continues to embody the courage, resilience, and fierce independence of the Highland clans.

For centuries, that snarling wildcat banner carried a message every rival understood.

Hello everyone โค๏ธ

I've just finished Ogma.

He's one of those figures I've been trying to paint for nearly two years!! Most people know him through his connection with ogham and writing, but the stories are much more layered than that. In the medieval texts, he's also a warrior and a champion of the Tuatha Dรฉ Danann. Strength and eloquence seem to go together with him.

While I was painting this piece, I ended up reading about Uaimh na Grรฉine, the Cave of the Sun near Loughcrew. Folklore connected it with Oghma, and people once told stories about treasures hidden under the hill. I love those little threads. You start with a name in an old manuscript and then find yourself following stories attached to the Irish landscape.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about Irish folklore. Traditions remain in motion, allowing characters and stories to be reinterpreted over time, so that each generation can preserve its own understanding while adding new layers of meaning.

So this is my own Ogma.

He is simply seated beneath the sun, calm and thoughtful. A figure surrounded by colours, patterns and winding lines, because words have always felt a bit like that : they connect things, they leave traces behind.
