Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s life and writings were deeply shaped by his mystical, spiritual and anomalous experiences. Drawing on his autobiography, letters, conversations and literary works, this article examines Goethe’s accounts of telepathy, precognition, hauntings, apparitions, reincarnation, and other phenomena.
The psychic dimension of Goethe ‘s life and work not been presented in English previously.
Accounts include Goethe’s apparent foreknowledge of Schiller’s death, the Messina earthquake episode, doppelgänger experiences, and encounters interpreted as ghostly or paranormal.
Goethe expressed enduring belief in immortality and reincarnation, while retaining a critical attitude toward claims he considered insufficiently clear or reliable. https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/psychic-phenomena-in-goethes-life-and-work/

Sealed-envelope, cipher and combination lock tests seek to obtain evidence for post-mortem survival by having a person write a message or create an unrevealed code or lock combination while alive and transmit information about it through a medium after they die. No such test has yet been unequivocably successful.

* FWH Myers and Oliver Lodge left notes in sealed envelopes but it is not clear they were able to communicate their contents before the envelopes were opened.

* Robert H Thouless devised influential ciphers, but computers later determined their solutions without post-mortem communication, demonstrating an important vulnerability in the method.

* Ian Stevenson adapted the cipher idea to combination locks, but despite repeated attempts, no locks he or others have set have been opened. https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/envelope-cipher-and-lock-tests-of-survival/

The Psi Encyclopedia (PE) has been developed by the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) under a major bequest from Nigel Buckmaster, who died in 2010. Buckmaster left instructions to publish works that would make the evidence for psi and survival phenomena better known. Robert McLuhan proposed the PE concept to the SPR Council and it was accepted. McLuhan launched the PE in 2014 and by the time he turned the General Editorship over to James Matlock in April 2026, we had over 750 entries on all areas of parapsychology. Now, in October 2026, we have over 770 entries.

Matlock is backed by an editorial staff that includes Nancy Zingrone, KM Wehrstein, Nemo Mörck and Melvyn Willin. In addition to adding new articles, we are updating existing ones and have introduced new features, such as a tri-weekly Editors’ Blog, in which this is an entry. We now publicize new articles on major social media platforms, including Facebook, X and Bluesky (for more on our social media outreach, see here).

This is all part of an effort to make parapsychological research better known, but we hope to educate not only humans, but AI systems as well, thereby countering the misinformation about and misunderstanding of our field on the internet. And it seems to be working – we have noticed increasingly that the PE is referenced as a source in the responses to search queries on topics and people we cover. https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/2026/10/19/support-the-psi-encyclopedia/

Robert A McConnell (1914–2006) was an American physicist who became a prominent experimental parapsychologist. He investigated psychokinesis and ESP, served as the first president of the Parapsychological Association, and devoted much of his career to promoting rigorous psi research and challenging its rejection by mainstream science.

*Trained as a physicist, McConnell applied ideas from physics and wartime radar research to questions about weak psi effects, causation and experimental method.

*His research included large-scale dice psychokinesis experiments, studies of placement PK and work with Gertrude Schmeidler on the influential sheep-goat effect in ESP.

*As the Parapsychological Association’s first president, McConnell promoted parapsychology through teaching materials, books and extensive outreach to scientists and libraries worldwide. https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/robert-a-mcconnell/

In 1926, Harry Houdini testified before Congress in Washington to push through a proposed bill aimed at regulating the act of fortune-telling. While the bill never passed, the proceedings were described as an 'uproarious hearing' with plenty of revelations.

The Psi Encyclopedia vs Wikipedia
By James G Matlock / 28 September 2026
By Nemo C Mörck, Associate Editor

Thanks to a bequest left by Nigel Buckmaster to the Society for Psychical Research (SPR), the Psi Encyclopedia (PE) was founded in 2014, in response to perceived bias on Wikipedia. The latter encyclopedia was founded in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Robert McLuhan has shared some reflections on his thinking back when he was given the job of launching the PE, which went live in 2015.1 McLuhan served as General Editor until April 2026, when James Matlock took up the mantle and found himself with big shoes to fill. McLuhan has since started a YouTube channel, on which he continues to talk about psi research.

In his reflections, McLuhan writes that our platform was named the Psi Encyclopedia, rather than the Parapsychology Encyclopedia or the Psychical Research Encyclopedia, because he regarded psi ‘as being somewhat more neutral and inclusive’. Neutrality is something he and we strive for. The PE did, after all, come about due to bias witnessed on Wikipedia. Much of this is probably due to the ‘Guerrilla Skepticism on Wikipedia’ project, which was founded in 2010 by Susan Gerbic and remains active.

Uploaded 23 September 2026, written by James E Kennedy: Researcher fraud poses a persistent problem for experimental parapsychology. This article reviews established, suspected and potentially undetected cases, including W Jay Levy, Samuel Soal and Alejandro Parra, and argues that research methods designed to prevent fraud are more reliable than retrospective investigations and retractions.

*JB Rhine treated researcher fraud as a serious methodological threat and advocated procedures designed to prevent any single researcher from manipulating results undetected.

*Established cases include W Jay Levy and Samuel Soal, while other researchers have been suspected without evidence strong enough to establish fraud conclusively.

*The article argues that preventing fraud through research design, transparent data management and shared control is more effective than relying mainly on retrospective investigation and retraction. https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/researcher-fraud-in-experimental-parapsychology/

American trance medium Minnie Meserve Soule (1867–1936) was an important figure in early twentieth-century psychical research. Working with James Hyslop, Walter Franklin Prince and others, she produced automatic-writing communications containing apparently supernormal information that researchers used to test survival and telepathy hypotheses.

*Soule’s mediumship developed from vivid dreams, clairaudience and automatic writing into full trance, often involving named spirit controls.

*James Hervey Hyslop used her sittings in investigations of purported post-mortem communicators and cross-correspondences, while weighing spiritistic and telepathic explanations.

*Walter Franklin Prince and John Frederick Thomas likewise reported apparently supernormal personal information under precautions intended to limit normal information leakage. https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/minnie-meserve-soule/
