In Scotland, death was never faced alone. 🕯️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The traditional Scottish wake, known as the Lykewake (from the Old Scots "lyke," meaning co**se), was one of the most sacred rituals in Highland life. When someone passed, the community gathered through the night to sit with the body, share stories, pour whisky, and sing. It wasn't just mourning: it was a final act of love and loyalty.

Peat fires were kept burning to warm both the living and the spirit of the departed. Gaelic laments called marbhrannan (death songs) were sung by the women of the village, their voices carrying grief that words alone could not hold. Whisky, the uisge beatha (water of life), was passed around not in celebration, but in communion.

The Scots understood something profound: that grief shared is grief made bearable. That the best way to honor a life is to fill a room with the people who loved them, and refuse to let the night go quiet.

This tradition lives on in Scottish communities around the world. 💛
