Broken Promises is a 501(c)(3) organization seeking to end animal overpopulation through TNR.

Broken Promises SW is a non-profit organization that humanely addresses community cat overpopulation issues through Trap/Neuter/Return. We operate a small sanctuary that is home to pigeons, doves, hens, and a turkey - all of whom were injured or have other special needs that make them unreleasable, or who found themselves in terrible situations and needed a safe place to live their lives.

We'd like to introduce you to our two newest sanctuary residents - Nugget and Todd. Nugget was rescued as a hatchling and raised indoors, but living in a house as an "only-pigeon" isn't ideal for him, so we welcomed him to our sanctuary. After he passes his vet check he will be introduced to our other rescued pigeons, and he will be part of the flock once he's been welcomed by the other birds.

Someone had purchased Todd at a feed store last March, thinking he'd grow up to be a hen. As often happens with chicks purchased in stores, Todd turned out to be male and grew up to be a beautiful rooster, Because roosters are not allowed within city limits, he needed a safe place to go. He's a Plymouth Rock Rooster with a very sweet and gentle personality, and he will be safe with us.

Broken Promises SW does not support breeding - we support rescue. That said, we do have compassion for the birds who, just like the cats we help, find themselves in difficult situations through no fault of their own.

A huge BPSW thank you to the amazing folks at Ol'Gringo Chile Co., for generously choosing to raise $300 for BPSW. They whipped up a special batch of their limited edition This Salsa Saves Lives recipe, and shared the proceeds with local rescues. YUM!

“You ain’t got no legs, Lt. Dan!” Well, to be fair, he has 2 front legs and 2 half back legs. And we just adore him! This boy was brought into the local shelter as a feral cat in a trap. He was so fluffy no one realized he was missing his back legs until they sedated him for TNR sterilization surgery. The shelter went ahead and neutered him and then asked if anyone could help with placement. This boy had already endured life on the streets being born like this - we wanted to give him his safety forever. He loves his other kitty friends and happily makes his way all around his home, including the enclosed catio! And he is NEVER late for a meal. This is his favorite bowl in his favorite eating spot. ❤️ He does not want to be picked up but he is very happy to accept lots of pets and scritches right before he eats. We love you, Lt. Dan!

ADOPTED! Meowser was recently returned to our rescue and we were pretty bummed. We always take our cats back but can’t help but feel we somehow failed them when the homes turn out to not be forever. We know it is sometimes inevitable but it hurts.

This is why we couldn’t be more thrilled that Meowser is already being snatched right up into an amazing home! He will have super cool cat perches to play on that go up to the ceiling and a feline sister to win over and bond with.

We know he is going to be spoiled and loved and cannot wait to hear all about it. Congratulations to Meowser and his amazing new family! 😻

We have a very exciting DOUBLE ADOPTION announcement today, and we could not be happier!

Spring and Meadow came from the shelter after their human had a very serious health crisis. As soon as we met these girls we could tell they had been very loved and we felt compelled to keep them together and find another amazing home for them. Well, that day is today!

This cat-savvy couple recently suffered the loss of their beloved senior kitty but knew they couldn’t live without kitties in their home. They’d been seeing Spring and Meadow and felt their cage card was almost written for them.

So today we happily watched as these girls are getting the chance at love again. We hope with some decompression and a lot of love and comfort, these girls will show themselves to be the perfect companions we know that they are. I know every single one of our dedicated adoption center volunteers are going to miss this gentle pair.

Congratulations to Spring and Meadow and their lovely new human family. ❤️❤️❤️

Our Tucson sanctuary had a special guest the other day. Our birds and cats are safe and secure, so kitty had to look elsewhere for a meal. No, we’re not going to TNR this one :)

Meowser was recently returned to our rescue through no fault of his own. We originally took him in over a year ago after he showed up on a local dog rescue’s property - trying to get friendly with all the dogs, even the ones who did NOT want to be friends!

He is absolutely so sweet once he warms up to people. He’s just a tad shy at first! He loves dogs and other cats.

It’s his first day back in our adoption center and he has not so much as hissed at our other kitties, including his new friend pictured here, Little Mama! In fact, Little Mama is extremely choosy about other cats and seems to only tolerate some males so far.

We TNR’d Little Bit 9 years ago, and got a call over the weekend she’d been relinquished to the shelter for euthanasia.

Apparently the original guardian had moved and another family moved in and was caring for this colony when LB appeared to lose sight in one eye. We were told she was taken to a vet but weren’t told if she’d been diagnosed or treated - and then she appeared to lose sight in the other eye so she was taken to the shelter.

This is why all of our cats, even our TNR’d ferals, are microchipped! At the shelter she was scanned and they saw she was chipped to us and we were called. We found out she is now quite friendly and we immediately refused euthanasia and picked her up. Today at the vet she was diagnosed with eosinophilic keratitis. This is an immune disorder where white blood cells invade the cornea. She also has an infection in her right eye. She’s been started on two different eye medications and she is sweet as pie! We aren’t quite sure if she’ll regain vision yet, as this might not have been caught and treated early enough, but either way we think she has plenty of life left to live and love to give!

Good morning friends! We are at a colony north of town that we’ve been trapping for a while. The last few cats have been difficult to catch so we enlisted the help of their caregiver this time. Because these cats scatter when they see our car, we thought it might be best to set up the drop trap and let the caregiver pull the string if a cat we needed walked under to eat. The caregiver set the trap while we were on our way to the location and she waited patiently for the cats to show up. A few minutes later, this pretty female walked under and our friend pulled the string. She immediately covered the trap with a sheet, putting rocks on the corners to prevent the sheet from blowing away. We arrived at the location soon after and transferred the cat into a transport cage. Teamwork! We still have one more appointment for Tuesday, so we are set up here and waiting.

It was a sad day today at the BPSW sanctuary. RooPaul, our beautiful rooster, passed away in his sleep.

It was the summer of 2022 and the sign on the bulletin board at the feed store read "Free rooster". Knowing very well that some people who take free roosters and hens have less than good intentions, we contacted the number on the poster and offered to take the rooster in. Roo was never anything but a kind and happy bird, though he never wanted to get too close to us. He lived with us in Las Cruces for a little over three years, and then several months ago he moved from Las Cruces to our satellite sanctuary in Tucson, where he was under the care of our board member Susan, who is far more knowledgeable about birds than we Las Cruces cat people are.

Two days ago Roo seemed to be a little low energy, and just as we were going to make an appointment for him to see a vet, we found our beautiful boy had died in his sleep overnight. We loved him very much and he will be missed. Rest easy RooPaul - you were a beautiful boy.
