Broken Promises is a 501(c)(3) organization seeking to end animal overpopulation through TNR.

Broken Promises SW is a non-profit organization that humanely addresses community cat overpopulation issues through Trap/Neuter/Return. We operate a small sanctuary that is home to pigeons, doves, hens, and a turkey - all of whom were injured or have other special needs that make them unreleasable, or who found themselves in terrible situations and needed a safe place to live their lives.

If you live in the Las Cruces area, you know the weather this evening was awful. Rain, wind, and cold. What kind of knucklehead would trap in weather like this? There's no way the cats will be around, and it will be a waste of time.

But what if it isn't?

We ignored common sense tonight and set out some traps anyway. And then the rain started, and it looked like it would indeed be a waste of time, But then the rain stopped. It stopped for only 10 minutes, but that was enough time for this pretty cat to come out from under her caregiver's house and waltz right into the trap.

Though the weather might be terrible, you miss 100% of the cats you don't set traps for. Lluvia wishes we would have taken the day off, but that wouldn't have been much fun, right? Spay day tomorrow!

Good evening, friends. It took only a few minutes after setting up our drop trap to catch this beautiful boy. He’s a little on the thin side and may have some issues with his teeth, but he’ll be feeling better after his trip to the vet tomorrow. We’ve got one more appointment to fill and we’ll keep on trappin’.

We started trapping Marley's colony in May of 2025. One by one, two by two, we trapped 22 cats there, but Marley wouldn't fall for any of our tricks. Different traps, different baits, different lures... no luck. Marley's caregiver bought her own drop trap to train her with, and still, nothing. This cat is smart, and she's got great survival instincts. Her caregiver then bought a large chicken hutch with doors on each end, and she started feeding the colony in there. Marley would go in with her sister Rowan, but when her caregiver approached to trap her inside she'd run away before she'd get close.

We e-mailed Marley's caregiver on Thursday: "Want to try to catch Marley Sunday morning?" "Joe, let me try on my own. She knows every car you and Rebecca drive and she won't come over if she sees any of your cars here." It was worth a shot.

Around 8:00 am the phone rang. "We caught Marley!"

Here she is. Kitty #23 and the last adult to catch. :) Never give up. Even the most difficult cats will eventually let their guard down and get a little too relaxed and comfortable - you just have to be ready for them when they do.

Look at the pretty face on Cherry Pie. She came to us after her person passed away and she’s currently waiting for someone to bring her home forever. She’s at our adoption cattery at PetSmart on Lohman if you’d like to stop by and tell her you love her. Send us a message for an adoption application!

This week we had to say goodbye to Rosalind.

This little feral girl came from the shelter with 6 kittens a couple years ago. We were not allowed to return her to her colony so we integrated her into ours.

About two weeks ago she got extremely sick and even with treatment she just got worse and stopped eating. Instead of letting her slowly starve, we decided to release her from suffering.

We love you, beautiful girl. You mattered to us.

Feral cats deserve love and respect. 🧡

We are thankful we were able to hold her in her final moments.

We returned to the community we've been trapping and caught these three perfect little angels. It's clear they didn't want to be photographed and have their pictures posted to the Internet, but that's part of the deal. In exchange for their photos, we'll give them some spay/neuter surgery, some vaccines to protect them from some communicable diseases, a microchip, and that all-important ear tip. Not a bad deal, if you ask us :) S/N days are tomorrow and Friday.

Update on Milton (turns out he’s a she, so we will call her Millie):

Sadly, we do not have good news. Millie had to be sedated as she’s feral and the doctor found her to be extremely anemic with very advanced dental disease and FeLV+.

Because Millie is feral and would very likely end up needing a blood transfusion and extended time in a cage to even see if we could get her well enough for a major dental surgery, then we would have to hope that would get her well enough to feel better, and then somehow find placement for a completely feral FeLV+ cat who would have to accept living inside, we made what we feel is the kind decision to let her go while she’s under sedation.

We are so sorry you suffered, Millie. We wish you freedom now from your pain and send you with all the love and respect we have as you leave this world. ❤️

Please spay and neuter your kitties to prevent unneeded suffering. 💔

We're so glad we trapped this evening. As you can see, poor Milton is in bad shape. He's very thin and he's drooling badly from his mouth. He's safe with us in one of our recovery cages and we're hoping to be able to get him to the vet very soon. We don't yet know what's wrong, but we'll do all we can to get him well.

Good afternoon! We are at a colony we have been trapping in the city for a little while, and we are trying to get one kitty for Tuesday’s surgery appointment. It’s a little before feeding time and we’re expecting the cats to show up pretty soon. We will let you know how we do!

ADOPTED! We are so excited to announce that Pirate went to a fantastic new home today!

We initially noticed him at the shelter a little while back wearing The Cone of Shame after his left eye had to be enucleated. We saw so many folks pass him by as he reached out at the glass, looking for love. We must admit that we are suckers for the misfits! So he came to our rescue!

This couple had been looking around after the loss of their elderly kitty earlier this year, and it turns out that Pirate was their perfect fit. We look forward to him being spoiled and learning what it is to be FAMILY. Congrats to Pirate and his lovely new mom and dad! 🥰
