Taiji: Yesterday, the dolphin hunters chased a nursery pod of Risso’s dolphins for over three hours. Nursery pods consist of mothers with calves and, often, a few helper “aunts.” They are vulnerable as the calves cannot hold their breath as long nor dive as deep as adults, making it easier for the hunters to see them. 5 young calves were dumped back at sea while all the adults were killed. 7-10 adults were slaughtered and one young calf died as well. It is not known if it was slaughtered or drowned during the process.

The man who trained the dolphins for the hit 1960s TV show Flipper has spent more than 50 years trying to end dolphin captivity 🐬💙

Ric O'Barry trained all five dolphins who played Flipper and even helped capture them from the wild. But after forming close bonds with the animals and witnessing one die in his arms, he became convinced that dolphins shouldn't be kept in captivity.

In 1970, he founded Dolphin Project, an organization dedicated to protecting dolphins and ending their captivity.

Since then, O'Barry has helped rescue and rehabilitate captive dolphins, supported efforts to end dolphin shows and worked to establish seaside sanctuaries for animals who can't safely return to the wild.

Now 86, O'Barry is the subject of a new documentary, Freeing Flipper, which follows his transformation from dolphin trainer to animal advocate.

Taiji: Today, the dolphin hunters intercepted a large pod of melon headed whales. The hunters split the pod and drove the smaller group, around 20, into the Cove. While all adults were tied by their tails under the tarps, two young calves were wrestled away from their family, into slings on the side of a skiff and taken back out to sea. Dumped without any adults. The hope is that they are able to reunite with the rest of their pod but it’s impossible to know what actually happened. The adults were all slaughtered. Their lifeless bodies were then dragged to the butcher house. Oct 15, 2026
