The Hidden Art History Behind Boathouse Row

Long before the modern lights went up on Boathouse Row, the local racing scene in Philadelphia inspired one of the most famous sports paintings in American history.

Painted in 1871 by renowned local artist Thomas Eakins, this masterpiece is titled The Champion Single Sculls (also known as Max Schmitt in a Single Scull). Eakins painted the scene to celebrate the massive victory of his close friend and attorney, Max Schmitt, who won the Schuylkill Navy single sculls championship on October 5, 1870.

What makes this painting truly unique is the hidden easter egg in the background. Eakins, who was an avid rower himself, painted his own self-portrait into the composition. If you look closely at the middle distance, you can see Eakins pulling the oars of a second scull, leaving his own signature and the date on the stern of the boat.

The setting captures a quiet moment of recovery on the Schuylkill River, just downstream from the original Columbia Railroad Bridge, accurately reproducing the exact weather conditions and late afternoon sun from the day of the championship race.

Next time you launch your boat for a training piece past the stone arches, remember you are rowing through literal art history.
