All Lots in the cemetery, with the exception of the original areas, have been marked if there is a Memorial Lot on it that contains rocks, little stones/beads, edging or fencing. Please remove these items by 12/31/2026. If we somehow missed your Lot but you have these items, please also remove them by the end of the year.
While this has been in the Bylaws for awhile, it wasn't always enforced. We have been running onto grass cutting, grave digging and maintenance issues with these types of Lots and while some are very beautiful - we need to begin to enforce the Bylaw.
You are still allowed the 2' of space IN FRONT of your headstone ONLY for flowers, lights, flags, etc. No shepherd's hooks, bushes or trees.
Thank you!
Slowly but surely, Sunnyside Cemetery will be enforcing the Bylaws on decorations, headstones and planting of flowers/trees/shrubs. There are MANY Burial Lots that are not compliant with our Bylaws and Wisconsin State Laws. It is very difficult to enforce the Bylaws all at once, when for many years, so much has been overlooked. For the past few years, we have began this enfocement and while there are some who have been upset with the rules, overall, families understand the need for them.
If you maintain a Burial Lot that has a memorial garden around it, please begin to remove it. It impedes future burials on that Lot and others nearby. Most times, these memorial gardens extend past the boundaries, as well. They also often contain items such as small rocks, stones or glass beads that end up being kicked up by the lawn mowers and could end up damaging headstones or hitting someone. Groundskeepers will begin the removal process for these memorial gardens, so if you have one and you want your edging materials or ground cover, please remove it in a timely fashion.
