We mourn the loss of NPIEN Oregon Chapter President Dr Anselmo Villanueva. He was a school principal in the Eugene School District and at O'Hara Catholic School and held other positions in Higher Education. He was active with the Philippine American Association of Lane County, the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), the Council of Filipino American Associations of Oregon and Southwest Washington (CFAA), the Community Alliance of Lane County, and many others. He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Villanueva,. Our thoughts of sympathy to Rose Mary and the family.

San Diego County is expanding its food assistance program to six new locations, it said in an announcement Thursday.

The new Safety Net Bridge Food Distribution sites will launch in winter in zip codes identified as high-need, which are anticipated to include Lemon Grove, Mountain Empire, National City, San Ysidro and Southeastern San Diego.

The county is holding discussions to decide on more locations to add next year.

The Safety Net Bridge Program works with San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego to provide households that need it with food. It also provides services like vaccinations, behavioral health resources, housing resources and help navigating federal benefit changes.

Between Aug. 8 and Oct. 10, the program helped more than 2,400 households in the county.

The county said that the expansion to new service sites will help more residents amid federal benefit reductions. It said that since June, about 2,200 people in San Diego County lost food benefits because of federal work requirements.

Since President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed last year, more than five million Americans have lost their SNAP benefits. The bill created stricter work requirements and shifted costs to states.

I wanted to share an internship opportunity and see if any organizations are interested in hosting a student next semester.

Selected students will complete 90 hours (6–8 hours/week) with a nonprofit, enroll in a 3-unit internship course, and receive a $2,000 participation award.

With 300+ NHPI students on campus, this is a great opportunity to connect students with our community organizations and provide hands-on experience.

📢 Program Updates

A few updates to our upcoming programs:

🎶 Aloha Music & Mindfulness continues every Monday. Please note that there will be no sessions on October 12, November 2, December 21, and December 28.

📚 School Talk Story is currently on hold. We’ll share an announcement once the next schedule has been finalized.

💛 Ohana Night will be taking a pause for now. Thank you to everyone who has joined and supported us throughout the program. We truly appreciate being able to share those special moments with our community.
