LIGHTNING CAN STRIKE OVER 10 MILES AWAY FROM A STORM⚑ It's called a "Bolt from the Blue" and will occur more and more in the summer months ahead. People sometimes think "The sky overhead is blue and the storm is way over there, I'm fine.” In fact, some strikes have occurred as far as 25 miles away from the storm!

Important tip: If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. "When thunder roars, go indoors." Do not shelter under trees, they are common targets for lightning. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activities. Stay safe outside everyone!

Congratulations to the 17 new Basic Training instructors in 6 area counties who completed the CERT Train the Trainer class taught by Sharon Litschauer and Steve Litschauer yesterday.

We are especially proud of our LWR CERT members Paulette Kessler-Westerman (Team 16) for achieving this goal and our Director, Responder Liaison John McInally who refreshed his Train the Trainer skills during the class.

Deactivated cell phones are not toys - they are still capable of making calls to 911.

When a call goes through to 911 from a deactivated phone, the Sarasota County Public Safety Communications Center does not receive data on where the call is coming from. This information saves valuable time in emergency response.

Official NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center 2026 Hurricane Season prediction. Good news: Below average. Bad news: it only takes one if it hits Lakewood Ranch!

πŸŒ€ NOAA Forecasts Below-Normal Atlantic Hurricane Season.

No shock here. Figured they'd go 10-14. Surprised they have such a large spread, but as most of you know, I think seasonal hurricane forecasts in general are useless anyway.

No matter the forecast for your area, remember: It only takes one storm to disrupt a community. Landfalls and impacts are determined by short-term weather patterns, so early preparation is essential for everyone.
