Lake Bluff Garden Club has a new website! Visit us at LakeBluffGardenClub.org to learn about our deep roots in the community.

The Lake Bluff Garden Club has been a vital part of the Village Community for over 100 years. The Club’s mission is to serve the Community and enhance the lives of our residents through beautification efforts, civic commemoration, conservation and wildflower protection. Established in 1917, LBGC’s beautification projects include the Great Lakes Naval Station and War Memorial and Blue Star Memorial. We donated the Geese sculpture by Sylvia Shaw Judson that welcomes visitors to the LB Library. LBGC designs and plants fifty floral containers in Lake Bluff, changing with every season. We are especially proud of our creation and enhancement of Washington Park, a truly special gem, a living gift to our Community.

Our club hosted a solemn and beautiful ceremony re-dedicating Lake Bluff’s Blue Star Memorial Garden this morning, September 11. The Blue Star plaque honors U.S. service men and women of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Lake Bluff Garden Club purchased the plaque in 2006, and we re-designed and re-planted it as a Sacred Space this year with native grasses and forbs. We are grateful for the assistance of Jake Terlap and the Lake Bluff Public Works crew.

Our Civics Committee worked lovingly on this project. Members include Peg Pezza, Marge Triplett, Mary Gustafson, Joan Harrington, Patti Roushar, Karen Jacobson, Karen Davis, Camille Andress, Lois Nichol, Genevieve Raymond, Leslie Bishop and club co-president Lisa Schwarz.

Lake Bluff Community Choir members KC Forsythe and Kathleen Doetsch sang the National Anthem and The Star Spangled Banner, and Lake Bluff History Museum president Kathy O’Hara shared stories of Lake Bluff’s contributions to previous wars.

Of course the date and clear blue sky kept our thoughts on the 2001 terrorist attacks on our country .

“Dance” is back! Our club gifted this beautiful steel sculpture by artist Margot McMahon to the Village of Lake Bluff in honor of our 75th anniversary, and it graced a busy downtown corner for many years. It has been relocated to a brand-new garden at the Lake Bluff Depot. We think it looks beautiful!

Just when we thought it was safe to put our gardening gear away…the village got 19 new planters!

On Tuesday some of our hardiest members filled the new Block 1 urns and troughs with our club’s signature assortment of beautiful flowers and greens.

This is a fantastic partnership with the Village admin and Public Works crew.

Summer has arrived! Four times a year, Lake Bluff Garden Club members redesign and replant nearly 50 concrete urns and troughs in downtown Lake Bluff. We completed “summer planter day” on Saturday, June 6.

Don’t the sidewalks look stunning?

Planter day is a beloved club tradition and a lot of fun! Karen Davis was at the helm with help from Candace Tillquist, club co-president Lisa Schwarz and the design team of Peg Pezza, Dora Hoogcarspel, Jane Rubin and Camille Andress — and dozens of club members who showed up with garden gloves trowels and more.

The planters are a community effort made possible through a partnership with the Village of Lake Bluff and the Public Works crew.

There’s a fresh new look at the Lake Bluff train station!

On May 9, Lake Bluff Garden Club members replanted the Blue Star Memorial garden, replacing gnarled, 20-year-old yews with beautiful native forbs and grasses. Spring is a great time to plant, and we are just in time for the village’s Lake Bluff 250 observations.

Blue Star Memorials honor all who serve or have served in the US Armed Services.

What we planted: Wild geranium, wild petunia, columbine, purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, butterfly w**d, and prairie dropseed. All species are native to Lake County (plus a little corner sedum!).

The impact: These match the business district plantings, creating a connected pollinator habitat and wildlife corridor through our village.

Thank you: A huge shoutout to the Village Public Works crew! They did a tremendous job removing the old shrubs and preparing the beds for planting.

Exciting news, Lake Bluff! The Lake Bluff Garden Club is giving our village’s Blue Star Memorial garden at the Metra Station a complete makeover.

This garden serves as a living tribute to the Armed Forces who have defended our country.

On Friday, hardworking Lake Bluff Public Works crew members helped us dig out the old and prep the soil for the new.

We will be out in the dirt again this Saturday, May 9, planting new life and beauty into this special space.
