Oh look it's Lassie with Timmy. ❤️
Flash ahead several decades....
Oh wait.

That IS Timmy (Jon Provost) whom we watched every Sunday evening on the Lassie show.

But,

That's not Lassie.

That is our collie, Kris, a rescue adoted from Northeast Ohio Collie Rescue. ❤️
Cool.

Very cool.
Jon is such a nice man, very humble and spiritual. His presentation on Lassie and Timmy was so interesting! We watched Jon's favorite episode of 240+ at the Collie Health Foundation's banquet. We are with collie lovers from all over at The Gathering at Sunnybank in NJ this weekend on the land that used to be the home of Albert Payson Terhune, author of Lad: A Dog and many other stories based on his real Sunnybank collies.

🐑 Same Job—Different Herding Style 🐑

Rough and Smooth Collies were bred to work livestock, but their herding style may look very different from that of other herding breeds.

First, Rough and Smooth Collies are two varieties of the same breed. Coat aside, they share the same heritage, instincts, and traditional working style.

Collies are generally considered upright, loose-eyed herders. Rather than crouching low and controlling stock with an intense, fixed stare, a Collie usually works with its head up and uses movement, position, body pressure, and sometimes its voice to influence the animals.

They are often natural gathering dogs. The Collie moves out around the livestock, brings the group together, and guides it toward the handler. Many can also learn to drive livestock away from the handler and perform other practical farm chores. Their style is often thoughtful and adaptable: apply enough pressure to move the stock, then release that pressure when the animals respond.

Compare that with a few other traditional styles:

🐾 Border Collies are famous for “strong eye”—an intense stare, often paired with a low, crouching posture and extremely precise control.

🐾 Australian Cattle Dogs and Corgis were developed largely as heelers. They work closer to the livestock and may nip at the heels of stubborn cattle to keep them moving.

🐾 German Shepherd Dogs traditionally excel at tending, patrolling an invisible boundary and keeping large flocks from wandering into crops or other forbidden areas.

🐾 Australian Shepherds are also generally loose-eyed workers, but many work closer and with more force, using movement, voice, and sometimes grip when necessary.

A Collie should never be mistaken for simply a beautiful dog with a glamorous coat. Underneath that coat—Rough or Smooth—is an intelligent, athletic livestock dog bred to notice movement, read a situation, cooperate with people, and make decisions.

Not every Collie will work exactly alike, and instinct varies between individual dogs and bloodlines. Training and the type of livestock also influence what we see. But the heritage remains—and when that instinct awakens, we get a glimpse of the capable working dog our Collies were created to be.

Preservation means protecting more than appearance. It means remembering the intelligence, soundness, temperament, and working purpose that made the Collie what it is. ❤️

Meet Beau — Our Brave, Sweet Boy 🐾

Beau is the definition of resilience wrapped up in a handsome Collie coat. He will turn 5 in September. He's an incredibly sweet, intelligent boy who clearly had training before coming into rescue. Eager to please and quick to learn, Beau already knows sit, down, and shake. At mealtime, simply pick up his food bowl and he'll happily walk into his crate, sit, and patiently wait until he's invited to eat. He's also fully housetrained.

Beau gets along wonderfully with other dogs and has a gentle, easygoing personality around all kinds of animals. Cats, ducks, and even turkeys don't faze him—he's simply curious and will often greet them with a polite sniff or a gentle "kiss."

Although Beau enjoys spending time outside, he currently feels safest indoors where he knows he's protected. We don't know everything he experienced before arriving in rescue, but it's clear that life hasn't always been kind to him. Because of that, he can be a little timid in new situations.

The beautiful thing about Beau is how hard he tries. With someone he trusts by his side, he's incredibly brave. He's learning that everyday sounds like lawnmowers, tractors, and wood splitters aren't something to fear. Garage doors are still a little intimidating, and when one opens, he'll usually seek out a quiet, safe place until the noise is over.

Every day in foster care, Beau's confidence continues to grow. The worried, uncertain dog who first arrived is slowly being replaced by a happy, relaxed boy who's discovering what it means to simply be loved. Watching him blossom has been nothing short of amazing.

Beau is looking for a patient, understanding family willing to let him move at his own pace while continuing to build his confidence. In return, you'll gain a loyal, affectionate companion with a gentle heart, a brilliant mind, and endless love to give.

Sometimes the very best dogs just need someone willing to believe in them.

Could Beau be the one you've been waiting for? ❤️🐾

🐾 Meet Scout 🐾
Scout is a stunning 6-year-old mahogany rough-coated Collie who's searching for the person willing to see the incredible dog behind his worries. ❤️

This handsome boy is sweet, smart, and likes spending time with his people. Whether he's chasing a ball, showing off his impressive tricks, or sitting on command, Scout is eager to learn and likes engaging with those he trusts.

Scout is looking for a home where he can be the only dog, and he's not a fan of his foster home's cat (though other cats may be different). Walks around other dogs make him uncomfortable, so he'll need an adopter who is patient and committed to continuing his training and helping him build confidence. He requires a fenced yard to romp in.

Scout also has a few quirks; windshield wipers terrify him, and he hasn't yet figured out that they're harmless. A quieter, more rural home may help him feel more at ease.

He also has food and grass sensitivities that can cause itchy skin, so he does best on a strict diet and may need regular baths to keep him feeling comfortable.

Scout is:
🐾 Neutered
🐾 Microchipped
🐾 Up-to-date on preventatives
🐾 Housetrained
🐾 Ready to find his forever home!

Scout isn't looking for a perfect family—he's looking for the right family. Someone who understands that trust takes time, celebrates small victories, and is willing to love a dog who will reward patience with unwavering loyalty. Contact us for more details.

If you think Scout could be the missing piece of your family, we'd love to hear from you. ❤️🐶 Adoption application is at https://www.neocr.org/adoption-process

🐾 Meet Mac 🐾
Looking for a loyal, gentle companion? Meet Mac, a handsome 7-year-old sable merle rough Collie with a heart as big as his 90-pound frame. Don't let his size fool you—he's not overweight, just a big, beautiful boy!

Mac is searching for a calm, loving home with minimal steps where he can relax and enjoy life by your side. He's happiest indoors, content to simply be near his people. While toys aren't really his thing, quality time with his family definitely is.

❤️ Mac's highlights:
• Housetrained
• Neutered
• Heartworm negative and on preventatives
• Microchipped
• Up-to-date on vaccinations
• No bite history
• Walks beautifully on a leash (and even ignores the bunnies!)
• Gets along with most dogs, cats, and children

Mac previously had some hot spots, but his skin is currently doing well. His fur had been cut short, but will grow back as a gorgeous coat. He also has a cyst near his tail that has been evaluated by his veterinarian, who has advised simply monitoring it.

If you're looking for a calm, devoted best friend who will happily keep you company, Mac could be the perfect match. He has so much love to give and is ready to find the forever home he deserves.

Please share to help him find his forever family! ❤️
