Laverne Cox has opened up about her early conversations with Caitlyn Jenner.

Speaking on 'The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi' podcast, Cox revealed that in January 2015, a friend reached out asking if she could speak to Caitlyn, who "had never met a trans person before."

"Caitlyn calls me the next day. We speak for like a few hours. She'd already had some feminising procedures. She talked about her kids mostly. And I supported her, and a lot of us in the trans community supported her when she came out."

Cox recalled the moment Caitlyn received Glamour's Woman of the Year award. At the time, Jenner said: "The hardest thing about being a woman is trying to figure out what to wear."

"The backlash. It was so tone deaf!" Cox said.

Cox went on to argue that early-transitioning trans people shouldn't be thrust into the spotlight so quickly.

"I think early transitioning trans people should not be in front of a camera for at least five to seven years."

"For Caitlyn to all of a sudden be held up, it was a rollout of her transness and her transition, she has not lived a life as a trans person yet."

"[At that point] she had lived the life of a person who is denying their transness, who is assumed as a straight cisgender male, with all the privileges that come with that, until she was 65 years old. She does not have the experiences of a trans woman yet."

Sarah has been a cornerstone of our community for nearly 5 years as a volunteer, spending the last 3 as Stage Manager for both the Pride Stage and VIP section. Before joining us, she honed her craft stage managing drag shows at Velvet Lounge and productions at local community theatres.
