Pastor Mark’s Blog

I have known this man for 25 years. He has worked for our family business that long. I lived beside him for a time, watching his children and grandchildren grow up.

Every day he opened our plant and began the machines working. He has keys to everything that I own. I trust him completely and love him like a brother.

But he is gone now. He and his wife were deported last month. They both had valid work permits in their hands as they were detained. His wife has numerous health problems. He was taking her to a Dr. appointment when they were surrounded by unmarked cars filled with masked men, afraid to show their faces.

I try to avoid politics. I am not trained in the field and most of it has become so polarizing. But I know this man and I know what he gives and what he receives. For 25 years he has paid into a social security system from which he will never benefit. But old Americans like me will.

He has faithfully and expertly repaired equipment that supports our fresh and waste water systems in the Valley. Now his tool box sits idle and he languishes across the border.

Why did he never cross the “T”s and dot the “I”s necessary for full citizenship? For the same reason some of us file our taxes late and never clean out the garage or any other overwhelming task we put off.

Failing to fill out those documents now has become catastrophic and criminal. All because many of us have believed the propaganda that the nation's biggest threats are foreigners who cross our borders.

Leviticus 19:33-34: "When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt". Does anyone read the Bible anymore?
