Trick-or-Treating Safety

• Stay Visible: Wear bright or light colors, add reflective tape or stickers to costumes and candy bags, and carry a flashlight or glow sticks.

• Supervise Children: Always accompany children under the age of 12. Older children going out alone should travel in groups, stick to familiar and well-lit areas, and follow a set curfew.

• Cross Safely: Use crosswalks and intersections, look left, right, and left again before crossing, and make eye contact with drivers. Never dart out or cross between parked cars.

• Choose Smart Costumes: Pick costumes that fit properly to prevent trips and falls, use non-toxic face paint instead of vision-blocking masks, and ensure outfits are fire-resistant. Avoid non-prescription decorative contact lenses.

Home & Decoration Safety

• Light Jack-o'-Lanterns Safely: Use battery-operated LED candles or glow sticks instead of open-flame candles inside pumpkins.

• Clear Pathways: Remove garden hoses, toys, bikes, and unlit obstacles from yards and walkways to prevent falls.

• Keep Heat Sources Away: Place cornstalks, dried flowers, and paper decorations away from open flames, space heaters, and light bulbs.

Domestic violence can have a lasting impact on children, affecting their emotional well-being and sense of safety. Helping them heal is an important step toward a brighter future.

The Florida Guardian ad Litem Office represents the legal interests of these children in court and in the community, advocating for their safety, well-being and permanency. Our team, including Guardian ad Litem Volunteers and mentors, plays an important role in supporting these children and making a meaningful difference in their lives.
