Seventeen members and friends of Rotary E-Club of Raleigh International recently returned from Jamaica where we worked directly with students and staff, at the Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf in Kingston. This concludes the second year of ongoing support for the school serving approximately 120 Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Projects conducted at the school during the 2024-2025 Rotary year are valued over $25,000 USD.

Personal engagement with hands-on projects exemplifies the club's commitment to meaningful service beyond mere financial support of the school. During our trip we painted an inspirational mural, installed a motivational hopscotch game, conducted interactive cultural presentations, and constructed equipment used in vocational education.

On this day when we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., let us reflect on one of his most quoted sayings: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

As Rotarians, specifically members of the Rotary E-Club of Raleigh International, we can be proud of the impact we are having on the lives of others, particularly the students and staff at Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf in Jamaica. While our efforts have made a difference at the school, they have also made a difference for us as individuals. We have created connections and developed community, across countries. We have grown as individuals, and we have had fun. We are living our motto of Connect. Travel. Serve.

Happy MLK Day!

The Rotary e-Club of Raleigh International (RECRI) was formed in 2023 as a cause-based service club. Our cause is Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf in Jamaica. Our work is focused on enhancing the learning environment for the students. One of our projects for the 2024-2025 Rotary year was renovation of the girl’s shower room to allow the students the comfort and dignity of freshening up after PE class in the Jamaican heat.

A Grand Opening Ceremony was held on January 15, 2025 to mark completion of the project. It is beautiful! Thanks to Mr. Wisdom the local contractor and Kingston East and Port Royal Rotarian Alexander Robinson the project manager for your work to bring this project to completion on time and on budget! We appreciate your work to benefit the students at Lister Mair Gilby High School for the Deaf!

Members of the Rotary E-Club of Raleigh International live all over the world, but we have clusters of members living in Florida and North Carolina. Both clusters enjoyed an in-person social event on Saturday. The NC group forgot to take pictures, but fortunately the FL group recorded their celebration. I look forward to the next time we're able to meet in person.
