We miss you 81 ๐ Your Sacrifice will FOREVER be remembered!
On the evening of November 1, 2021, Senior Patrolman Sherman Otto Benys Jr. responded to a domestic dispute in the 300 block of South Wanda in Kingsville. As Ptlm. Benys and other officers arrived at the scene, a male subject, involved in the incident drove up to the area in a blue SUV and opened fire on the officer who was on scene along with children and a female. The officer engaged the shooter with her duty weapon. Ptlm. Benys who was approaching the incident in his vehicle. Placed his vehicle in park and exited the unit to engage the shooter to protect the civilians. Ptlm. Benys after firing off several rounds came over the police radio and stated that he had been shot.
The shooter, got back into his vehicle, and fled the scene. Responding officers were able to locate the vehicle and the shooter was apprehended by officers and taken into custody.
Officers on scene began to perform live saving measures on Ptlm. Benys and he was transported by EMS to the local hospital. Sr. Ptlm. Benys succumbed to his wounds during the early morning hours on 11/04/2021.
Senior Patrolman Benys had served with the Kingsville Police Department for over 20 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.
81s Heroes was formed in honor of our fallen hero, Sr. Patrolman Sherman O. Benys, Jr., KPD Badge No. 81, whom we lost in the line of duty on November 4, 2021.
The organization, 81s Heroes, was named to commemorate ALL those that were engaged on that catastrophic day. It is they who have given us the strength to continue to โMake It Happen.โ They will Forever be 81s Heroes.
81s Heroes supports first responders in Kingsville, Texas and Kleberg County with equipment, training, counseling, and other immediate financial hardships to ensure the community takes care of those taking care of them.
