Happy Monday!! 1 day closer to the regional school in September. Get your tickets from the link below, we keep throwing surprises your way, don't wait until its too late. Here's another surprise, more talent coming to spread some knowledge, now joining the team of speakers! Meet Mike Scotto!

Mike Scotto was appointed to the FDNY 2/1979. Assigned to Eng.18 in Manhattan, transferring to Lad. 157 in Brooklyn in 1992. Promoted to Lt. Nov. 1997 and assigned to Lad. 58 in 5/2000. A National Fire Instructor Level 1&2, a NYS Fire Instructor, an Orange Cty . NY Fire Instructor as well as a Master Exercise Practitioner certified thru Homeland Security. Mike had published numerous articles in Size-up magazine and has been featured on several podcasts. These include Getting Salty # 85, The Training Officer, FDNY Pro, The John Rondi podcast and the Daily Mail series” Experts by the Decades. Next up on the team of speakers coming to the SVVFA Regional School this September, one of our homegrown firefighters, meet Jack Reekes.

Our final instructor and MC for Southside is Burning is Jack Reekes. Jack has dedicated 31 years to the fire service, beginning at just 16 years old with the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department. Over the years, he has also served as a volunteer with Hampton Division of Fire and Forest VFD.

Before joining the fire service full-time, Jack served as a Damage Controlman in the U.S. Navy. He was later hired by the Chesterfield Fire Department, where he has spent the past 23 years, including 20 years assigned to a truck company. He currently serves as a Lieutenant on Truck 3.

Jack is passionate about all aspects of truck work, with a particular love for search operations. He is especially proud to represent the middle generation of three generations currently serving with the South Hill VFD.

Meet Jess, joining the speakers at Southside is Burning event this September!

Jess Rodzinka has 30+ year volunteer/career service. Captain for Charlottesville Fire Department in Charlottesville, VA. Currently Assigned to Training. Previous assignments have been: Engine 5, Truck 9 and Tower 10. Prior to working in Charlottesville, Jess worked for Staunton Fire and Rescue for 11 years where he was assigned to Truck 1 and Engine 2. Jess holds certifications in Virginia officer 4 and Instructor 3. A constant student of the craft Jess teaches up and down the east coast truck company operations as well as forcible entry, as well as Virginia Truck Schools.

Meet Bobby! Spreading some knowledge at Southside is Burning lecture this September at SVVFA Regional School in South Hill, VA. Don't miss it!

Bobby is a dedicated fire service professional with nearly 30 years of operational and leadership experience. He retired in 2023 as a Captain with Norfolk Fire-Rescue after 28 years of service and continues serving the fire service community as the operator assigned to Rescue 2 in Suffolk.

As a 20-year HazMat Manager with FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 2, Bobby brings extensive expertise in hazardous materials response, urban search and rescue, fireground leadership, incident command, and company-level training.

Having served in both leadership and backstep roles, Bobby is passionate about mentoring the next generation of firefighters through real-world lessons learned from the street, the command post, and the training ground. His instruction emphasizes practical application, leadership through service, pride in the craft, and continuous learning.

Personal Mission:
“To honor the job by doing it well, to never stop learning, and to make the firefighters around me better than I was.”

We have some very special guests showing up for the Southside is Burning event at the upcoming SVVFA Regional School in South Hill, VA.

Special Guests : Melanie Clark and Olivia Robinson

Melanie Clark is the widow and Olivia the daughter of Hanover County Fire‑EMS Lt. Brad Clark, who was killed in the line of duty in 2018 when a tractor‑trailer struck his fire engine during a storm response. Since his death, Melanie has become a respected advocate for firefighter and roadway‑incident safety, sharing her story nationally to raise awareness about the dangers first responders face on highways. She continues to honor Brad’s legacy through public speaking, community engagement, and support for the fire‑service family.

Meet Alex, one of the Firefighters joining the lineup at Southside is Burning this September at SVVFA's Regional School in South Hill, VA.

Alex Caldaro is a 15-year veteran of the fire service, having served in both career and volunteer departments. He is currently assigned as the Chauffeur of Squad 15 with Winterville Fire-Rescue-EMS. Caldaro is an active member with the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department, the busiest volunteer department in the nation, where he currently serves as the Truck Company Sergeant. In addition to his operational roles, Caldaro is an instructor for several programs focused around truck company operations, sharing his experiences and knowledge with firefighters across the region. His focus is simple, test the theories, train with a purpose, and make sure you can execute when it matters. He brings an unapologetic passion for the fire service and holds a high standard to delivering the highest level of service to the citizens he serves.

Meet Zach, one of the speakers coming to SVVFA Regional School this year for the Southside is Burning lecture. Make sure you're there!

Zach Coleman brings over 15 years of dedicated service to the fire service, encompassing both volunteer and career experience. He
currently serves with distinction as a Lieutenant at Station 5 in Roanoke City, where he divides his time between an Engine Company and a Ladder Company. In addition, he holds the role of Deputy Chief at the Forest Volunteer Fire Department. Zach is known for his unwavering passion for the fire service—a passion that is evident in everything he does. He has a strong commitment to Search and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations, and while his heart lies in truck work, he approaches every assignment with the same level of enthusiasm and professionalism. Above all, Zach remains grounded in the core mission of the fire service: unwavering dedication to the citizens we serve. For him, it is never about the title or the tool—it is about putting others first, always.

Meet Mike, who will be a speaker at the upcoming SVVFA Regional School this September at the Colonial Theater in South Hill, VA " Southside is Burning " training.

Mike, a native of a small farm town south of Buffalo, NY, has over 21 years in the fire service between various volunteer and career departments. Currently assigned as a firefighter/ladder company chauffeur in Ladder 29 in the South Bronx. Mike has been with the FDNY for 10 years, and has been up and down the east coast for the past 6 years instructing with a variety of cadres, most recently with New York Truck Work Fire Tactics.
