Papermaking Workshop with Mary Milelczik

Join artist Mary Milelzcik for a Papermaking workshop on Saturday, June 27, from 10 am to 2:30 pm at the Volcano Art Center in Volcano. Newcomers and Advanced students are welcome. $85/$80 plus $50 for fiber pulp, plant dyes and pigments, prep, and supplies.

This workshop will introduce you to papermaking from learning how to make a mould and deckle, to recycling heavy weight Arches art paper, adding local plant materials, dyes and earth pigments to make beautiful one-of-a kind papers. Using a using a household blender and various sized moulds and deckles, you are able to make paper in a variety of sizes, scrolls, layered artwork or create a painting with colored pulp. Participants are encouraged to bring flowers and plant material to add color, or other small interesting things to imbed in their paper. Assistance will be provided for larger more complex projects. You will leave with a basic knowledge of papermaking, instructions on how to make paper at home, pulp and supply resources, and a unique variety of handmade papers that you’ve created.

Plants used in this workshop may include lemon grass, wauke (paper mulberry), ginger, old growth cedar, homegrown cotton, cane grass, etc. (depending on availability). To allow for more paper making time, the instructor will source, prepare and cook plant materials for pulp, dyes and paint, in advance of the class.

Join Lydia Meneses on June 13th , from 10am – 1pm at VAC Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. There are no mistakes in Zentangle Art.

Beginners learn the basic Zentangle art method of drawing and those with experience get the guidance they need to take their Zentangle practice a step further.

As we travel beyond the Zentangle art method we will explore a few of Zentangle’s creative concepts to add to you art practice, like the curly~swirly “Splat” design.

Gathering Light at the Niaulani Sculpture Garden
Sunday, June 7th at 4pm

The Volcano Art Center (VAC) proudly announces an expansion of sculptural works titled Gathering Light at the Niaulani Sculpture Garden, located at VAC’s Niaulani Campus (19-4074 Old Volcano Rd.) in Volcano Village. The expanded collection opens on Sunday, June 7th at 4pm. Artists with works selected for this juried exhibition include Emsy, Ingrid Fregeau, Renate Jaworska, and Patrick Sarsfield. The collection also features a community sculpture coordinated by Elizabeth Miller.

The Gathering Light outdoor exhibition works were selected by sculptor Randall Shiroma and ceramist Emsy. The five new sculptures explore the dynamic play of light and shadow with other environmental elements, while also exploring the garden’s role in “gathering light” for growth and life.

The public is invited to attend the opening reception on June 7th from 4-6pm. Kumu Keala Ching will open the event with a blessing followed by hula performed by members of hālau Ke ‘Olu Makani o Mauna Loa. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

The Volcano Art Center invites you to attend Shaped by Fire, a fine art exhibition featuring the folk art metal work of husband and wife team Lois and Ernest Rich.

This free exhibit will be on display from May 16th though July 5th, 9am to 5pm daily at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in H.V.N.P.

While the exhibit is free, park entrance fees apply.

May 9th Hula Kahiko performance: Cancelled

Volcano Art Center announces the cancellation of the May 9th hula kahiko (traditional hula) performance with Keala Ching with Hula Hālau Nā Wai Iwi Ola. We apologize for this change and hope to reschedule this halau later in the year when environmental conditions improve.

Monday Print Lab: Relief Printing Workshop

Mondays 4 - 5:30 pm

Discover the foundations of printmaking through relief printing, one of the oldest most satisfying print processes. In this six-week workshop at the Volcano Art Center, experienced staff will guide participants in designing, carving, and printing their own relief blocks inspired by the striking graphic style of Dietrich Varez.

Students will explore carving techniques, inking methods, and hand-printing processes. No prior printmaking is necessary, just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Class open to ages 13+

6 sessions: $120/$108 for VAC Members, plus $20 material fee.
