🌧️ Hawaiʻi Storm Update 🌧️

We’re relieved to share that both of our cat sanctuary locations made it through the storm safely. All of our cats are accounted for 💛

We did have a few trees uprooted, but thankfully our volcanic soil absorbs rain well, so we avoided any serious flooding. Still, this storm was intense—over 34 inches of rain in just a couple of days and wind gusts up to 60 MPH. With so many large trees around, it was definitely a nerve-wracking experience.

Some of our kitties got a little wet, but they always had shelter and food in their tummies. After 5 days without power, we were finally able to get everyone warm and cozy again with dry beds. A huge mahalo to our amazing Volcano neighbor, Bobbie Burandt, who brought fleece blankets when she got power back before us.

In addition to the cyclone, we’ve also experienced two recent tephra storms. When the tradewinds are still and the volcano is active, it’s like lightweight rocks falling from the sky. Unfortunately, two of our cats got tephra lodged in their paws. It’s sharp—almost like glass—and very difficult to clean up. Both have been treated by the vet and are recovering well, though they did develop infections. We’re keeping a close eye on all our cats for any signs of limping or swelling.

This photo shows Batman having his paw treated at the vet to remove tephra. We’re incredibly thankful to Pahoa Animal Hospital for always taking such good care of our kitties and seeing them so quickly 🐾

💛 How You Can Help
We’re currently facing increased vet expenses and need to buy extra warm, dry beds to keep our cats dry during these storms in the future.

If you’re able to support us, we would be so grateful:

UPDATE: thank you to everyone who donated, Roxy got her surgery. Her stitches are out and she’s figuring out how to walk on three legs, and she’s doing great!

Please help Roxy get her surgery.

Roxy was found at her colony with a severely broken front leg. Laura (one of her wonderful feeders) took her to Dr. Ansari right away, and we agreed to care for her.

The vet tried splinting her leg for four weeks, but her x-ray yesterday did not show enough improvement, so she needs an amputation. Laura is willing to match up to $500 of donations for her surgery.

Roxy is so sweet. She has the worst fire ant eyes I’ve ever seen, several pellets from a pellet gun in her body and even one in her face 😡 and now a broken leg but her spirit still shines. Nothing can stop her! Please help her get the surgery she needs and she will live indoors with us for the rest of her life.

If you prefer to donate directly to Big IslAction 4 Animals Hawaiimessage us, so we know that you are doing that. Her surgery is on Friday 2/6, and she is under my name, Christin Greenland.

Huge thanks to Laura Devlin and Action 4 Animals Hawaii for helping to pay her bills so far.

We are a 501(c)3.

Another Success story/Spotlight on Velvet 🥰

Last year, we were alerted by a feeder at one of the county parks to a kitten with a bad eye infection. By the time we got her (with the help of another feeder) both her eyes were then infected. Without treatment, she could have ended up losing one or both eyes.
We couldn’t leave her brother behind, so we took both in.
Fast forward to today, and not only are Velvet (and her brother Jean-Claude) thriving, but I’m not afraid to say Velvet is one of my Favorites 💝
Often, these little sweethearts make the Best furry friends, seemingly understanding they’re the lucky ones, ever grateful to have a safe, loving home. The love is mutual 💞
Thank you, feeders, for doing one of the hardest jobs, and for always working with us to help these sweeties 💛 We look forward to working together more in the future to the benefit of everyone ❤️
Edit: when feeders do the extra work of handling them when they’re kittens, like this one did, they have a better chance of being healed and adopted out 🙏
