🌧️ Hawaiʻi Storm Update 🌧️
We’re relieved to share that both of our cat sanctuary locations made it through the storm safely. All of our cats are accounted for 💛
We did have a few trees uprooted, but thankfully our volcanic soil absorbs rain well, so we avoided any serious flooding. Still, this storm was intense—over 34 inches of rain in just a couple of days and wind gusts up to 60 MPH. With so many large trees around, it was definitely a nerve-wracking experience.
Some of our kitties got a little wet, but they always had shelter and food in their tummies. After 5 days without power, we were finally able to get everyone warm and cozy again with dry beds. A huge mahalo to our amazing Volcano neighbor, Bobbie Burandt, who brought fleece blankets when she got power back before us.
In addition to the cyclone, we’ve also experienced two recent tephra storms. When the tradewinds are still and the volcano is active, it’s like lightweight rocks falling from the sky. Unfortunately, two of our cats got tephra lodged in their paws. It’s sharp—almost like glass—and very difficult to clean up. Both have been treated by the vet and are recovering well, though they did develop infections. We’re keeping a close eye on all our cats for any signs of limping or swelling.
This photo shows Batman having his paw treated at the vet to remove tephra. We’re incredibly thankful to Pahoa Animal Hospital for always taking such good care of our kitties and seeing them so quickly 🐾
💛 How You Can Help
We’re currently facing increased vet expenses and need to buy extra warm, dry beds to keep our cats dry during these storms in the future.
