Hawaii Island School Garden Network

Hawaii Island School Garden Network We support more than 60 school learning gardens on Hawai‘i Island through professional development, advocacy, mentorship, and technical assistance.

The Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network (HISGN) is a group of teachers, administrators and educators committed to incorporating outdoor education with Hawaiian culture as a pathway to integrated learning. Our mission is to cultivate the relationship among our children, teachers and the ʻāina, by providing a vibrant network that supports the growth and integration of school learning gardens. Numer

ous studies show that school learning gardens improve academic performance in a wide spectrum of subjects, foster positive attitudes toward learning, bolster healthy behaviors and nutrition, promote cooperation and teamwork, and instill children with pride in their work and the food they grow. The Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network connects Hawai‘i’s keiki to real food, healthier eating habits, and the ‘āina itself. HISGN works closely with the state-wide Farm to School Hui which works with all the island school garden networks to develop garden and nutrition programs for learning gardens, and help schools procure fresh, healthy, locally grown food.
