Brush Fire - Waimea (Kamuela), South Kohala
On Old Saddle Road near the 51-mile marker

Update # 1: HFD Crews have the fire under control and working to extinguish any remaining hot spots and also wet down the area. No injuries.

Preliminary Details
Report of a 20’x50’ area of brush burning along Old Saddle Road. Winds strong in the area and HFD crews working to gain control of the fire.

Traffic Collision - North Hilo
On Highway 200 (Saddle Road/Daniel K. Inouye Highway) at the 25-mile marker

Update # 1: PTA Fire on scene again assisting HDOT crews cleaning the roadway, large scene/area to clear. Tow trucks arriving on scene to clear the vehicles and take to a secure facility (No School Bus or Refuse Vehicles were involved in this collision). No updates given on the condition of patients involved. TEU will release details later this evening. Roadway should be opening within the hour.

Preliminary Details
Three vehicles, Silver Ford SUV, white sedan, and white Chevy Pickup involved in a broadside/rear end type collision. Debris scattered all over the roadway in both directions and one person was trapped.

HFD Medic transported a total of 4 patients to the Hilo Medical Center with conditions listed as serious to extremely critical.

Due to patient’s condition, HPD TEU Officers are en route to begin their investigation.

Traffic Collision - Waikōloa, South Kohala
On Highway 190 (Hawai’i Belt Road) at the intersection with Highway 200 (Saddle Road/Daniel K. Inouye Highway)

Update # 1: HFD, PTA Fire, and HPD at the scene, Kona bound (or southbound) lane of Highway 190. Semi with a refuse bin trailer overturned resulting in refuse to fall out onto the roadway. HDOT along with a large wrecker and company representatives is en route to the scene to upright the truck and clean the roadway. Driver self extricated prior to emergency crews arriving at the scene.

The Draft Environmental Assessment for the Waikōloa Road/Paniolo Avenue Roundabout is currently available for public feedback. Please take some time to review this document and submit your comments.

Hard copies of the draft EA are available at two locations: the Hawai‘i County Department of Public Works Office (Aupuni Center, 101 Pauahi Street, Suite 7, Hilo, HI 96720) and the West Hawai‘i Civic Center (75- 5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Bldg. D, 1st Floor, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740).

This document evaluates the potential environmental impacts of a proposed project and informs decision-makers and the public about the environmental consequences of implementing the proposed action and to identify measures to mitigate adverse impacts or enhance positive ones. If no substantive issues are identified during the comment period on the draft EA, DPW will adopt the EA as final, issue a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), and fund the project. If substantive comments are received, DPW, alongside Bowers and Kubota, will evaluate and address those comments in a Final EA or as part of the FONSI documentation and may consider whether changes to the grant or project implementation are appropriate. The FONSI will be posted to the same websites as listed above. DPW will only publish another public notice for this project if a final EA is published.

Written comments are due by Monday, April 8, 2024.
