☀️🍂 Worsening drought conditions are hitting home. The Hawaiʻi Climate Data Portal just released its 2025 Climate Report, and the findings underscore a growing climate challenge for our islands. 📊📉

In 2025, a staggering 65% of Hawaiʻi experienced abnormal dryness or worse. Driven by rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns, these prolonged dry spells are straining our water resources, harming local agriculture, and drastically elevating wildfire risks statewide. 🔥🌾

Water is life—ola i ka wai—and tracking these climate trends is the first step toward building a resilient future. While macro policy changes are underway, daily conservation at home acts as a powerful collective shield for our underground aquifers. 💧🛡️

Simple, water-smart actions you can take today:
🚿 Upgrade fixtures: Swap out old showerheads and aerators for low-flow models.
🌱 Smart irrigation: Water your yard in the early morning or evening to stop evaporation loss.
🧼 Go efficient: Run dishwashers and laundry only with full loads.

💰 Oʻahu Residents: The Board of Water Supply offers fantastic cash rebates for installing water-efficient toilets, clothes washers, and rain barrels!

Hawaiʻi Island’s Kanehoa Firewise Community completed two wildfire preparedness projects through its Spring 2026 Cost Share Project.

The community updated a 30-year-old irrigation system, with residents contributing the labor and grant funds covering parts and materials. The community also used remaining grant funds for a roll-off dumpster and to limb up Ironwood trees. Some residents also used the green waste dumpster to clear vegetation from their own properties.

Great work, Kanehoa! Community members spent over 100 hours on these projects, not including the many texts, emails, and phone calls between committee members.
“Our community spent over 100 hours on our two projects.”

Hawaiʻi Island’s Kumulani Firewise Community completed several wildfire preparedness projects with support from wildfire mitigation funding.

Sixteen community members contributed 44 volunteer hours toward vegetation reduction, emergency access improvements, and community preparedness. Projects included removing 15 cubic yards of dead vegetation and ladder fuels from around homes and common areas, clearing vegetation buildup from 20 garage roofs covering more than 10,000 sq. ft., installing a Knox Box at the main community gate to improve emergency responder access, and sharing evacuation planning and Firewise educational materials with residents.
Great work, Kumulani!
