Ahead of Father's Day this year, I pitched this story to the Gazette with a subject line that said: "The gift Iowa dads actually want and can't return." A few months later, I did not expect Elijah Decious to make me cry at the breakfast table.

EraLoom is in the Cedar Rapids Gazette today. Five photos. Cliff's train trestle story. My dad's pet name for me in print - "Hey, Bird" - which I was not prepared for on a Sunday morning.

If you've been meaning to sit down with your dad, your grandma, your aunt, your uncle - the one who tells the best stories, the one who always starts with "now I probably shouldn't tell you this" - please read this today. Then call them.

The stories are the thing. They always were. Keep the connection alive.

10 seats left. That's it.
Our Family Storytelling Workshop with the Genealogical Society of Linn County Iowa is on June 27, and we're almost full.
16 families have already decided that time is not going to win.
They're not waiting until "someday" to save their family stories. They're showing up June 27 and leaving with the tools to capture those stories this weekend.
Not next year. Not "when things slow down." This weekend.
Because here's the uncomfortable truth: the stories are there right now. The people who hold them are there right now. The only thing standing between your family and losing them forever is someone deciding to ask.
That someone could be you. June 27. 10 seats left.

Here are 5 questions that unlock the stories your family actually wants to hear. Remember - generic questions get generic answers. Specific questions unlock memory, emotion, and wisdom! Which of these would you ask someone you love? (Save this post—you might need it sooner than you think.)

Meet Tina Stuart.

She currently lives on the Big Island of Hawai'i and has opinions about everything from papaya to politics.

And now, her grandchildren will hear her share - in her own style - a glimpse of what it was like to grow up in Hawai'i in the 1950s.

Not because someone wrote it down... but because she told her story on camera. Hope this inspires you to do the same.

Mahalo for sharing, Tina!
