USA Spearfishing Team USA Men's National Spearfishing Team's Official page. Team competes in the CMAS World Spearfishing Championships & Pan American Championships.

The USA National Spearfishing Team consists of the 4 divers with the highest cumulative score from the past two USA Nationals. In addition, a team Captain is selected by the divers. Worlds is celebrated biannually. The current World Team is comprised of:

USA teams have been historically underfunded over the last 60 years. We believe proper funding will allow the USA team to excel internationally and that is why we need your donations (Tax Deductible by the way). Funding is needed to assist the divers with travel expenses, scouting efforts and all other associated cost necessary to compete at the World level. Here's how you can help support the Team:

Freediving is a very old practice but has been growing at an amazing pace in the USA the last few years. We have several divers who can be highly competitive at the World level. Please help the Team to succeed in 2022 & 2023 and hopefully continue growing the sport into the future. Spearfishing is the most SUSTAINABLE way of fishing and freediving spearfisherman can serve greatly in the conservation of our oceans. Join the team!!!

Our Story

The official CMAS International Championships started in 1954 with the “European Championship”. Its fourth edition in Mali Losinj in former Yugoslavia, which took place in 1957, was later proclaimed the 1st “world championship”, as the USA national team took part in it (Italy, France, Spain, Yugoslavia and Monaco were the other participants). Ever since, the championship has been well established and 30 events (biannual) have already taken place in several coasts in Europe, South America, Cuba and Tahiti. After many years the World Spearfishing Championship returned to the Mediterranean Sea (Syros, Greece 2016), where the epic battles among the giants of the past, the deep waters and the big groupers crafted its stunning history through time, leaving their distinctive mark and leading this particular institution to a very special place in our hearts...Team USA performed stellar at the 2016 Worlds! Team USA produced 9th place individual out 75 athletes and 7th place among 25 countries. In Sagres Portugal 2018, our two top athletes will be competing with the advantage of a previous Worlds experience and in an environment that is even more favorable to USA then Greece.

The 2018 USA National Spearfishing Team consist of 4 divers with the highest cumulative scores in the past two USA Nationals. In addition, a team Captain is selected by the divers and in turn the Captain selects additional Team members to support the divers. Worlds is celebrated biannually and next Worlds is in Sagres, Portugal September 6-10, 2018. Current World Team members are: Divers-Ryan Myers, Justin Lee, Paul Young and Kelston McGuire. Captain- Joe Fernandez, Coach- Cameron Kirkconnell, Doctor- Dr. John Shedd, Technical Delegate- Dr. Erik Salado, Strategy Delegate- Mike McGuire, Delegates- Chuck Hartz & Capt Leston Rodriguez and Documentarian- Sam Mase. Freediving is a new phenomenon growing at an amazing pace in the USA & the world. Spearfishing is one of the disciplines of the freediving world and the most practiced. Spearfishing is also the most SUSTAINABLE way of fishing.
