Kailua Kona Pier Swim Group

Kailua Kona Pier Swim Group Aquatic enthusiasts who enjoy ocean swimming at the Pier in Kailua Kona, Big Island, Hi WHAT'S THE DISTANCE OF THE BUOYS AT THE PIER?

The State maintains the first five buoys next to the Pier. The round trip distances are not known but the fourth one is probably about 1/4 of a mile or a little less. The next three buoys are the ones that the Pier Group installed and maintains. Heading south, the first one is round with a diameter of about 16". It is located off the southern end of the Kona Shopping Village and is approximately 1

/2 mile round trip. The next one is also round and is 3/4 mile round trip. The third one is cylindrically shaped and is off shore from the Lava Java Restaurant. It is 1500 meters (about .9 mile) round trip. None of the distances are exact as we had to drop then where there wasn't any coral and where the wave action would stress the moorings and anchors as much. The fourth buoy that many of us swim to is the King Buoy and is maintained by Kona Aquatics. It is more or less in line with our three buoys and is 2K (1.2 miles, half Ironman distance) round trip. The Pier Group is not really a club but an Fan page to facilitate information about swimming, racing, triathlon, and the ocean issues. If your looking for someone to swim with, come down to the pier and talk to the swimmers. Another method: go out about a couple of hundred yards and "adopt" a group who is about your speed. Most people will welcome your company. The best time to swim is usually the morning, normally from about 7 to 9. Thats when you'll generally find the best conditions and the most fellow swimmers. Swim safe, stay on the buoy course.

ALOHA Swimmers πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ
IRONMAN World Championship and IRONMAN Hawaii Honu 70.3 are looking for non-profit volunteer groups to help at both races. They have a variety of volunteer jobs open and available and a chance to volunteer as a group in a fun environment. This is an exciting way to give designated charitable monies back into our communities and organization on our island.

Qualified non-profit groups can earn a charitable donation for their contribution based on the following requirements:

Non-profit/charitable 501.3 organizations (clubs, schools, sports teams, churches, socials, special interest groups) that provide a volunteer group qualify to receive the monetary donation from IRONMAN for either or both races
Groups must be a minimum of 10 volunteers for 4 hours or more and work as a team. Donations vary based on hours worked and number of volunteers
Volunteers do not need to work or belong to the non-profit organization; they just need to sign up as part of your group with your coordinator. For example, if you have a family or group of friends who want to put a group together and designate a non-profit/charity to receive the funds, we can set that up as well!

Volunteers receive food, beverage and volunteer t-shirts! Volunteer areas include aid stations, clean-up crews, set up/breakdown, transition, water patrol, volunteer info, run & bike course guides, finish line & VIP ✨️

Any interested groups, please email Kerstin at [email protected]

For any individuals who want to volunteer on their own, please see below weblink to register online

Aloha Pier Group ... attached is a flyer for the upcoming Intermediate Hawaii Fish ID Class which will cover 70+ most commonly reported fish from our Big Island dive sites. The Intermediate Class is not to be confused with my Beginner class which covers the first 50 most commonly reported fish.

As such the beginner class is not necessarily a prerequisite for this Intermediate Class if folks are interested.

A Beginner Hawaii Fish ID Class is planned for early in May 2023 and hope to offer both Beginner and Intermediate classes later this fall.

Feel free to contact Ron with any questions 🐑🐠🐟😎
