On Saturday, April 11th, Joe and Michaela DuBose graciously hosted a Race Committee Training Day on the lanai of the Kona Sailing Club.

It was a fun and informative session, and we fully welcomed all those in attendance to the Race Committee Volunteer Crew Community.

What was covered...

How To Operate As A Race Principal (PRO)

The Race Principal leads race day operations and oversees the race committee during the start and finish of the race. The PRO works with the Rear Commodore and race volunteers to ensure races follow the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions.

How To Operate As A Coxswain

The Coxswain operates the race committee boat and works closely with the PRO to position the start line, manage marks, and support race operations on the water.

Aloha West Hawaiʻi 🌊

This Sunday, we’re getting on the water.

We’re hosting a Community Sail Day with our Hilo ‘ohana, Na Hoa Holomoku — and they’re bringing a double-hull sailing waʻa.

It’s a relaxed, fun day at the club:
⚓ No racing
🌊 No pressure
⛵ Just sailing

📍 Kona Sailing Club
🗓 Sunday, April 26
⏰ 10:00 AM

All are welcome. No experience needed.

Have a boat? Bring it out and help share the day.

Come for the sailing. Stay for the ‘ohana.

See you on the water.

Aloha, I’m Commodore Dan Schweitzer with Kona Sailing Club.

Here on the Big Island, the ocean is everything. Long before us, Native Hawaiians were master navigators, using the stars, wind, and waves to find their way across the Pacific to Hawai‘i.

That legacy doesn’t belong in the past.

It belongs to the next generation.

Through our Youth Sailing Programs, we give keiki the opportunity to step into that story. To get on the water. To build confidence. To lead. To learn respect for the ocean and for each other.

Whether it’s a first sail or the next step in their journey, this is where keiki grow on the water.

And right now, there are more keiki ready to sail than we have the resources to support.

That gap. That’s opportunity.

Your donation helps:

• Put keiki on the water
• Provide scholarships for local families
• Fund instructors and safe equipment
• Expand access to something that can change a life

This is bigger than sailing.

This is about confidence. Direction. Belonging. A future shaped by the ocean.

Every donation helps to puts a child on the water. Every share helps us reach the next one.

If this speaks to you, please give what you can and share with your ʻohana.

GoFundMe may add an optional tip. You can set this to $0.

Mahalo for helping carry this forward.

🌊 Aloha KSC Members and Friends! 🌊

Exciting news! We've received a 13 ft Hobie Wave catamaran for our Youth program! This new vessel will enhance our teaching fleet and will be named by our youth sailors during the Summer Sail Camp.

We're also working towards our $20,000 funding goal to support our education programs. If you can, please consider donating! We're specifically looking for five donors to contribute $1,000 each to help us acquire a used Zodiac/RIB safety boat for the youth.

Additionally, we need funds for vessel repairs, fuel for the committee boat, and to fix the clubhouse roof. Your support is crucial!

Let’s keep sailing together!

During Spring Break, our keiki sailors rigged their boats, launched with confidence, and made their way through the harbor and out into the channel, learning real seamanship along the way.

There were smiles, shakas, a few wobbly starts, and some seriously proud moments as these young sailors took the helm. 💙

And the best part?
Seeing them out there side by side with their instructors, gaining skills, courage, connecting with other keiki in our community, and a love for the ocean that will last a lifetime.

Mahalo to our incredible instructors, volunteers, and families who make this program possible. And to our KSC ‘ohana, your support keeps these opportunities alive for our keiki.
