With heavy hearts as well as hope for a new beginning, we will be closing our doors for the foreseeable future. The little seed that is the KōLab was just an idea a year ago, and we have had the most amazing journey watching her grow since opening in December! 🌱

Unfortunately, the space we have been renting is being re-acquired by the lessor, so we are riding the wave of these small business hardships, and choosing to look forward rather than back.

Mahalo nui to all who’ve supported our team, shared space and ideas, and believed in our vision of a more equitable Hawai’i 🌟

We love this little nook in the KōLab - it’s perfect for intimate conversations, brainstorm sessions, or just putting your feet up and taking a rest 🙇🏽‍♀️

Our team of wahine are passionate about making sure that everyone has a place to feel comfortable. This zone, deemed the “captain’s cabin” was inspired by rustic restaurant booths and middle eastern aesthetic 🌞

As with the rest of the KōLab, almost all construction materials were repurposed or sustainably sourced, and all installations were designed and constructed by the wahine who dreamed our space into reality ✨

Alright alrightttt ohana we’re back for another Mana’o Monday! Today we’re diving into the beautiful world of ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i and the importance of keeping our native language alive as a way of better appreciating our rich culture, both past and present. 🏄🏾‍♂️🌺

To lead us on this voyage of discovery, and rediscovery for our ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i speakers, we have Kuʻulei Perreira-Keawekane joining us to host an Ola Brew x Kuulei Music ‘Ōlelo Course.

Ku’ulei is a singer, songwriter, and budding farmer from Panaewa, Waiākea on the East side of Hawaiʻi Island. She teaches lessons on Hawaiʻi culture, history, language, and worldview, and facilitates space for Hawaiʻi people to reconnect to our identity, heritage, and place. Kuʻulei also creates safe space for non-Hawaiian people to understand the land-based relationships and responsibility that living in Hawaiʻi requires.

The course will take place at our Kona Taproom starting next Monday from 6 - 7:30pm. This series of 5 consecutive classes (May 30th / June 6th / June 13th / June 20th / June 27th) will be focused around examining the lyrics, translation, and interpretation of the song Aloha ʻĀina Meds. 🖤🎶🌿

Through this process, you will also learn:

🎼 The context / history behind the songs included in the medley
⚓️ The depth + relationality of the Hawaiian language and culture
🗣 Intentional pronunciation of common Hawaiian words
👋 How to introduce yourself
✍️ Basic sentence structures to use daily

We encourage participants to attend all 5 classes as each session will build upon the previous one. To support our amazing kumu, we are asking attendees for a suggested donation of $15 - $30 per class although no one will be turned away if you are unable to contribute! Whatever you can offer is appreciated… even if it’s just your presence. 🙏🏽

Following each lesson, Ku’ulei will also be sharing some of her mele with us from 8pm to 9pm in the Taproom. Perfect way to unwind and ease into your week! Send us a DM with any questions otherwise RSVP through the Eventbrite link in our bio. Hope to see you thereeee!!! 🥰🤙

ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE.

Pre-occupation, wahine had much stronger rights and autonomy compared to other nations, so it’s no surprise that Hawai’i was the first “state” to provide legal and safe abortion services + other reproductive health services.

These rights and services are now in danger across the continent and in Hawai’i. Indigenous, Black, and Immigrant communities are among those most affected by the possible overturn of Roe v Wade.

Please hold space for one another during these times, donate to abortion funds, and CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS! Congress must act to codify Roe v Wade before it’s too late.

TODAY! Reproductive rights are human rights. We will be joining Matriarchy Rising here in Kona at 4pm today to protest the likely overturn of Roe v Wade. The government should have no jurisdiction over women’s bodies. We hope to see you there.
