Chelsea’s advice: If you’re nervous about applying. It’s worth it.

Phoenix Scholarship recipient Chelsea thought the Mark Garwood Foundation was too good to be true. She couldn’t believe there was a group of people, who, because of their loss, were raising money to help people in recovery go to school.

Excited about the opportunity, but nervous to apply, Chelsea decided she had nothing to lose.

“It was a leap of faith. It takes a lot of courage to put our stories and our dark past on paper. I put my soul in the essay in a way I never had before. It was very vulnerable, but I was inspired by my own lost years in and out of recovery. I knew I wanted that life. I wanted to do this.”

Last year, Erica and John Garwood were guests on the Hanley Foundation’s Hanley Effect podcast. They shared the story of losing their 24 year-old son, Mark, to complications of substance use disorder and type I diabetes and how his last text message to them gave them the hope and courage to rise from their unimaginable grief to find a way to honor Mark’s legacy of selfless service to the recovery community. The result was the Mark Garwood Foundation.

“I used to not have hope of being alive. I didn’t have hope of being happy. I didn’t have hope of going back to school. Now I have hope of getting a law degree debt free. Who does that? I am so grateful and proud to tell people I have this scholarship.” Grace K.

Before receiving a Phoenix Scholarship, Grace worked multiple jobs to make ends meet and pay for school. “I didn’t get to participate in any extracurriculars, and my only friends were my friends in recovery.”

Now, thanks to the Mark Garwood Foundation, Grace has only one job, less stress, and can participate in several activities at school, including Law Review, all of which make Grace a happier, more well-rounded person and a better candidate for employment.

While Grace is our first Phoenix Scholarship recipient to attend law school, other scholarship recipients are taking their first classes toward an associate degree or trade certificate. Many scholarship recipients work full-time and are parents, so often they take one or two classes each semester, making sure they can maintain a healthy balance with their work, family and sobriety.
