Although they lost their home, Wallace, Padawan, Shepherd, Maya, and Razor are safe, as are the rest of the sanctuary residents and staff. OPS provides wonderful care for primates who were once used in research or rescued from other cruel situations, but they need help to raise $15,000 to rebuild a new house for Wallace and his pals. It’s always wonderful to see AAVS founder Caroline Earle White being recognized for her pioneering contributions to the animal rights movement.

Fourteen years after establishing the Women’s Pennsylvania SPCA, Mrs. White established AAVS to protect stray and stolen dogs and cats from being used in experiments. We are so proud to carry on her legacy!

Many people are shocked to learn that millions of animals, including monkeys, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and horses, are used in inhumane experiments every year in the US.

But did you know that mice, rats, and birds who are bred for research make up about 90% of the animals in US labs, yet they aren’t even classified as “animals” under the federal Animal Welfare Act? Because these animals are left without protections under the law, AAVS speaks out for them.

AAVS advocates against cruel research, and we help animals freed from labs go to approved sanctuaries where they are well cared for and given the life and comfort they have always deserved.

They all matter.

A glance at this month’s e-news:

Following years of advocacy by animal protection organizations, including AAVS, multiple federal agencies have updated their regulations, investments, and scientific approaches to recognize non-animal methods (i.e. human cells, organs-on-chips, computer models) as tools in drug development and testing and biomedical research. Together, these changes signal growing acceptance of non-animal approaches for a future where better, human-relevant science can lead the way.

The month’s Sanctuary Moment features Inca, a macaque who may share more in common with your dog or cat at home than you think.

We want to share the story of two victims of the Pregnant Mare Urine (PMU) industry: Peggy (Right) and her daughter, Melanie (Left).

Nameless, and known only by the numbers branded on their backs, pregnant mares on PMU farms are confined to stalls so cramped that they are unable to turn around or lie down during much of their pregnancy. Containers are strapped in place so their urine can be collected and used to make hormone-replacement drugs. Foals are often destined for slaughter, while their moms are bred again and again as the circle of cruelty continues.

Peggy was rescued from a PMU farm while pregnant with Melanie. Now, they share a pasture with a herd of other rescued horses. We’re grateful they have a wonderful sanctuary home!

Farmed Animal Awareness Week may have ended, but AAVS's work to help protect farmed animals suffering in labs continues. Just like dogs, cats, and guinea pigs, farmed animals suffer tremendously as they are used to study heart disease and neurological disorders, develop vaccines and other biologics, as models in trauma and surgical training, and agriculture research for industrial farming.
