Today is National Wildlife Day! From primates to fish, many wild species are used in inhumane experiments annually in the US, often funded by the federal government.

AAVS works to end the use of animals in research, testing, and education, and for labs to use non-animal methods, instead. All wild animals deserve to live full and healthy lives in the wild!

Happy International Primate Day! From baboons to macaques, over 60,000 primates are still used in inhumane experiments annually in the US, often funded by the federal government. This number does not even include the animals used to breed future generations that will be exploited for research.

AAVS is campaigning to eliminate the use of monkeys in federally funded biomedical research, bringing us closer to our goal of eliminating the use of animals in science entirely.

AAVS has joined Humane World for Animals and the Avian Welfare Coalition in filing a lawsuit against the USDA for unlawfully excluding a significant number of birds from coverage under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). The lawsuit builds on the success of AAVS’s 20 year-long campaign that gained AWA protection for birds, who were previously excluded from the law. Everyone at AAVS extends our deepest sympathies to the folks at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest on the passing of Negra. One of the first seven chimpanzees rescued by CSNW, Negra was used for breeding and Hepatitis B vaccine trials, enduring decades of biomedical research while confined to windowless basement at the Buckshire Corporation. We're grateful for everything CSNW did to give Negra not only a life free from suffering and exploitation, but also the chance to experience life's simple joys and truly thrive.

Negra, the Queen of the Cle Elum Seven, passed peacefully yesterday afternoon. She was estimated to be between 53 and 58 years old. Following its bankruptcy filing last month, animal supplier Inotiv’s stock is now officially worthless, as of July 19. But the company, which owns notorious animal breeder and dealer Envigo, remains open for business. It is now private, with financial support from its lienholders, but continues to exploit animals for profit. In 2024, Envigo pleaded guilty to the crime of conspiring to knowingly violate the Animal Welfare Act, after it was forced to shutter its beagle breeding site and release 4,000 dogs to rescue groups for adoption. In 2026, USDA inspections of Inotiv companies, including Envigo, have documented multiple “critical” citations and animal deaths, and it still holds hundreds of thousands of animals for sale and experimentation.

The company’s private status reduces public transparency and accountability, but the cycle of animal suffering and death continues.

Today is World Chimpanzee Day! It’s a time to raise awareness about chimpanzees and the sanctuaries that care for them, ensuring they have the best lives possible. AAVS has a long history of supporting sanctuaries providing homes to chimpanzees who were once used in experiments. AAVS is taking a stand for primates and sanctuaries! In voicing support of the CDC's initial decision to stop its primate research and to send over 100 macaques to the Born Free USA sanctuary, AAVS also blasted what it called “alarmist, inflammatory conjecture” from animal researchers.
