Andando

Andando Strengthening communities in rural Senegal. Our name comes from a Wolof word meaning “walking together”. Wolof is the main language of Senegal, West Africa.

The Andando Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) public foundation that was formed in 2007 out of a desire to “walk together” with some of the less fortunate citizens of our world. Senegal is the the principal country in which Andando operates, but we also have projects in Swaziland, Panama and Paraguay. Our goal is to alleviate poverty through micro development. This can happen in a variety of ways, and a

Open for Business: the Belel Kelle Maternity Ward 🩺 is completed, fully furnished, and operational!

A few months ago, we shared the story of our partners in Belel Kelle, who had taken it upon themselves to begin building a new maternity ward. They made incredible progress but eventually reached the limits of what they could complete on their own.

Thanks to the generous support of Hub City Church, construction is complete, and the medical team at Belel Kelle is already serving members of the community!

More than 5,000 people depend on this health post for care. The expanded facility is expected to support approximately 150 births each year, help staff screen and monitor more than 500 children for malnutrition, and provide thousands of additional services ranging from prenatal consultations and vaccinations to malaria treatment and routine primary care.

Giving Aïssatou Space to Learn: “There are kids who want to study, but when they arrive, the class is already full.”

We’re excited to welcome Ndiakhaté as our newest partner community, where construction is underway on two new classrooms at the village elementary school.

More than 500 children in Ndiakhaté are old enough to attend school, but the elementary school currently enrolls only about 200 students, leaving more than 300 children without a place. By the start of the coming school year, the new classrooms will create space for at least 100 additional students to enroll while also reducing overcrowding! Please help us give a very warm welcome to Jenny🎉, who has joined the Andando team as our Development Director! If her name sounds familiar, that’s because Jenny isn't new to Andando; in fact, she has spent the last several years supporting us as a grant writer.

She brings over a decade of experience in nonprofit development, having worked with organizations across South America, Africa, Central America, and the United States. She has already helped secure several grants for Andando and looks forward to helping the organization grow even further. Jenny lives with her family in Bastrop, Texas. Construction of the 🐟 fish basins are well underway at Daga Sambou, one of our newest women's cooperative gardens to receive integrated aquaculture.

The community is eager to add fish farming to the garden. This new addition provides fresh, high-quality protein while using the nutrient-rich fish water to boost crop harvests🥕🍅🥒; all without increasing overall water consumption💧!

Special thank you to Tomberg Family Philanthropies for their support of our aquaculture program.

"Thanks to you, we are on top of the world! You have given us more than infrastructure. You have given us hope, health, self-reliance, and pride." --Ousemane Fall, President of the Youth of Senobowal

This was the reaction we received after completing the renovation of bathrooms at the Senobowal Elementary School📚✨.

Over the last several years, we have partnered with the village of Senobowal on a series of impactful projects to serve the whole village through increased access to healthcare and clean water, women's economic empowerment through agroforestry, and now, improving school facilities to support young learners on their educational journey.

We are thrilled to welcome Lohenne, a small village of 630 residents, as our newest partner community. They requested help establishing a women's garden, and during the site visit, we discovered an opportunity to do more.

The village already has a local well; however, its distance from homes places a difficult burden on the women and girls responsible for collecting water.

When we tested the village's well capacity, we discovered that it is one of the most productive wells we have ever tested. Together with the village, we decided to install a larger system that could serve both the garden and provide easy access to clean drinking water for the entire village! Farmers are improving the health of the soil by bringing trees 🌳 back into their fields!

After this year's microloan distribution day, participants received training in Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration, a method of protecting and managing native trees that naturally regrow on farmland.

Thanks to the Rick Steves' Europe Climate Smart Commitment, we added 100 zero-interest microloans, bringing the total this year to more than 300 farmers across 22 villages!

Along with loans, each farmer receives trees from Andando’s nursery, as well as supplies to start their own nurseries closer to home. More at https://www.andando.org/news/300-farmers-receive-microloans-and-trees

This just in: grab your buckets, Wouro Kelle has water!

Our team just sent us this video from the field, where we recently completed a new borehole well in Wouro Kelle.

This village of more than 600 people has never had access to clean drinking water. So when we began pumping the new well to test its capacity, people came from all around to collect water. No one wanted to miss the moment, and we wanted to share it with you directly.

A big thank you to Seaboard Overseas and Trading Group, Les Grands Moulins de Dakar and private donors for making this project a reality.

Next up: the solar pump system and water tower go in this month. Stay tuned!
