Never forget...

Two administrations that bungled the Covid crisis are going to pretend it never really happened.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, many parents and educators have been raising the alarm about the effects of grief, isolation and other disruptions on the mental health of their children.”

Yup. Countless Bring Kids Back parents wrote letters to the Oregon School Board warning the board of the negative impacts of remote schooling on learning and mental health, but the board never responded or even acknowledged them. Instead, Steve Zach, Krista Flanagan, and Leslie Bergstrom spent hours of school board time patting themselves on the backs for the great job they were doing.

Meanwhile, Oregon students suffered and are still paying the price for the Oregon School District’s malfeasance.

The effects of the pandemic on children are persistent and require urgent attention.

NEVER FORGET.

Three years ago today, Oregon School District parents and students rallied to urge OSD Board President Steve Zach and Superintendent Leslie Bergstrom to open schools for in-person education.

Zach and Bergstrom failed Oregon kids, parents, and taxpayers.

Except for the Oregon School Board, Public Health Madison & Dane County and their allies, everyone realizes the negative impact OSD's slavish devotion to remote learning had on Oregon's young people. The Wall Street Journal highlights a few:

- Among the approximately 40,000 candidates taking the Fundamentals of Engineering exam for work as professional engineers, scores fell by about 10% during the pandemic...that means fewer engineers on the job and a lower degree of competency among those who make it. The sharpest declines in scores came on questions measuring the most specialized knowledge. Structural engineers failed to answer questions about the use of trusses in the construction of bridges and roadways.

- Despite lowered standards at many schools during the pandemic, high-school graduation rates fell.

- Scores for college admissions exams dropped to the lowest level in three decades.

- New workers have problems with soft skills, such as an inability to deal with frustration.

- Managers at the John Ball Zoo are coaching seasonal workers in their teens and early 20s on basics such as why it’s important to look visitors in the eye, and how to make change at a cash register.

- Scores on Army recruiting exams fell 9% since the pandemic and prompted the Army to create new testing boot camps to help recruits pass the test, a requirement for gaining admission to the military. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth, a Biden political appointee, believes a lot of the struggles are tied into lethargy and isolation that took root when students learned remotely during the pandemic.

The Oregon School District kept our kids out of in-person education for a year. How will Oregon graduates compete against graduates of schools that returned to full time, in-person learning in the fall of 2020?

When Bring Kids Back OSD parents told the Oregon School Board that remote schooling was hurting disadvantaged students the most, members of the Oregon Allies accused them of “tokenizing” disadvantaged students to get their own kids back in school. But, as this University of Wisconsin-Madison study shows, Bring Kids Back parents were right, and it was the Oregon Allies who were “tokenizing” disadvantaged students to justify keeping their own kids home.

A local family is suing the Coppell Independent School District for allegedly retaliating against them after they complained about a school assignment.

It kinda makes you wonder...when Steve Zach and Leslie Bergstrom said that Public Health Madison & Dane County would not allow Oregon School District to provide in-person education, would there really have been any consequences? Or would PHMDC ust say, "The COVID pandemic was a difficult time for all, and Dane County concluded that it was not in the public interest to continue prosecution of this case."

Dr. Carlos del Rio, interim dean at Emory University School of Medicine, said public health experts didn’t foresee the effect of learning loss and isolationism on students. That impact could be the most long-lasting, UCSF professor of medicine Dr. Mark Smith said.

“We made a mistake with schools,” del Rio said. “I hope we don’t make it again.”

REALLY??? Remember when Bring Kids Back OSD parents wrote letter after letter to the Oregon School Board, only to have “doctors” like Jon Temte, Mary Lokuta, and Leslie Bergstrom claim that keeping kids out of school was the best thing for them.

We remember.

If we wound the clock back to the early 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, what would some doctors do over? School and economic guidance, for two.

Once again, that bastion of conservative journalism, The New York Times, nails it.

“We found that test scores declined more in places where the Covid death rate was high, in communities where adults reported feeling more depression and anxiety during the pandemic and where daily routines of children and families were most significantly restricted.”

School closures tell you only part of the story about what our kids have lost.

There is no doubt that COVID causes memory loss. Teacher union boss Randi Weingarten has forgotten that she bullied government officials and parents to keep schools closed. OSD Board President Krista Flanagan has forgotten that she questioned why schools were responsible for mental health before she voted to raise your property taxes to hire more mental health practitioners for the school.

There are only two possible explanations. Severe memory loss, or a complete absence of integrity.

The teachers union chief tries to rewrite the pandemic history of school closures.

AFT President Randi Weingarten: "We spent every day from February on trying to get schools open. We knew that remote education was not a substitute for opening schools."

Next up, Steve Zach and Krista Flanagan try to gaslight you about how hard they worked to get schools open again.

“AFT President Randi Weingarten: "We spent every day from February on trying to get schools open. We knew that remote education was not a substitute for opening schools."”
