The Delaware County Children’s Special Advocacy Network (DCCSAN) was the vision of the district attorney, child protective services (CPS) and a therapist. They saw a need to deal with the serious issue of child abuse in Delaware County by implementing a team approach. They formed a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) made up of the district attorney, law enforcement, child protective services and other a

gencies dealing with child abuse in the county. In September 1994, the team established DCCSAN to provide a child focused setting and to provide services to victims of child abuse. DCCSAN became a fully accredited member of NCA in March 1997, and was re-accredited in October 2008. DCCSAN staff continue to provide, forensic interviewing, counseling, multidisciplinary team coordination, case tracking court preparation, and crisis intervention children of Delaware County.

As Child Abuse Prevention Month begins tomorrow, DCCSAN is emphasizing the importance of online abuse awareness and internet safety. Throughout the month of April, we will be sharing helpful resources, videos featuring real stories from individuals impacted by online abuse through the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, and practical tips to help keep children safe in the digital world.

Today we pause with heavy hearts to honor and remember a remarkable supporter and friend of DCCSAN. Ed Townsend was a foundational donor whose vision, generosity, and belief in protecting children helped make our Child Advocacy Center possible. Because of his commitment, countless children and families in our community have received safety, hope, and healing. His impact will be felt for generations, and his legacy lives on through every child helped and every family supported.

Ed and Barbara Townsend’s support began as early as 1995—before we were DCCSAN and before a Child Advocacy Center existed in this county. At that time, it was not yet a program or a building, but a shared vision and the determination of people in this community to do better by kids. Mr. Townsend believed in that vision from the very beginning, and his faith in the work helped turn an idea into a lasting resource for children and families. That same vision ultimately led to the opening of our new building in 2023, a place that will serve and protect children in this community for the next 50 years.

We are deeply grateful for Mr. Townsend and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

There is still time to help! Shop with a cop is coming up, and you can help make a child's Christmas extra special this year. $150 to sponsor one child for this super fun experience, but any amount helps! There are roughly 575 children signed up this year to Shop with a First Responder, during Delaware County's Shop with a Cop event! Scan the QR code or visit our website https://dccsan.org/shop/ to donate and help. You can also donate at Grand Savings Bank in the Shop with a Cop account!
