The top BFO Priority Pillar selected by 2025 Grant Recipients was Pillar 2: Mental Health & Substance Use Support. This pillar focuses on health care access, community and social context, and education by reducing stigma and improving mental health resources.

In a close second, Pillar 5: Early Childhood & Family Support, which advocates for education access, economic stability, and social support by addressing foundational needs for families. Other strong contenders include Pillar 7: Social & Civic Engagement, and Pillar 3: Healthy Living & Chronic Disease Support.

From these 2025 applications, we can observe that many local organizations are addressing interconnected needs related to mental health, family stability, and community connection. Grant applicants recognize that by supporting well-being, strengthening families, and fostering engagement, we can all contribute to building healthier, more resilient communities, together.

Sometimes big problems require big solutions, and luckily, big plans are taking shape right now in Dubois and Orange Counties.

BFO is investing $500,000 through our 2026 Community Collaboration Grant program to support two community-driven efforts:

🌱 Screens in Balance: Dubois County Digital Wellness, led by Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools

🌱 Orange County Bridge to Stability Housing Collaborative, led by Team OC

BFO’s Community Collaboration model seeks to pull people and resources together around large-scale challenges by utilizing expert facilitators to explore the issue, map gaps and resources, and devise a plan for change that is informed by both community voice and research.

Together with community members, local organizations, and cross-sector stakeholders, these collaborations will focus on digital wellness for children and families in Dubois County, and providing safe and stable housing as a foundation for long-term health and well-being in Orange County.

In 2025, BFO distributed more than $650,000+ in grant funding across our eight-county Southern Indiana region, investing directly into the people, programs, and partnerships that strengthen our communities.

From one county to the next, every dollar represents support for organizations working to improve health, wellness, opportunity, and quality of life throughout our region.

This first year of public grantmaking is only the start of the change we are already creating together. Through these philanthropic efforts, we are building healthier communities, creating lasting impact for future generations, and truly putting “unity” in “community.”

Today we wish a very Happy Birthday to Donna Balka, who serves as our Vice Chair on our Board of Directors! 🎁

Donna retired from her role as Administrative Director of the Dubois County Health Department back in 2018, but has been very busy being a true "Community Cheerleader" in the meantime. Not only is Donna the Vice-Chair on the BFO Board of Directors, but she serves as a volunteer member on 6 additional boards for various local nonprofits and organizations!

Thank you Donna for your countless years of service to the greater Southern Indiana community, and for truly "Being for Others" in all that you do! 🌟

ICYMI:

The Town of Montgomery,IN has a new space for the community to gather and grow, celebrating the completion of the new Montgomery Park earlier this month with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community gathering. 🌳

Being able to dedicate a public space where others can gather, connect, and stay active is such an integral part of mental health and physical wellness. Seeing Montgomery allocate resources to bring this priority to fruition is truly inspiring. 💕

Congratulations to this small-but-mighty Daviess County, Indiana town! 🥳

A large crowd gathered for the dedication of the new Montgomery Park Friday. The park has created a new focal point on the town's Main Street.
