Did you hear the latest tariff update from June 1? The Trump administration has announced another adjustment to its Section 232 tariff program, temporarily reducing tariffs on certain HVAC, agricultural and industrial equipment while maintaining broader protections on steel, aluminum and copper imports.

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation June 1 modifying tariffs that were expanded earlier this year under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. The administration said the changes are intended to support domestic manufacturing while easing cost pressures on industries that rely on equipment used in agriculture, construction and industrial operations.

Under the new policy, certain derivative products including HVAC equipment, forklifts, bulldozers, harvesters and other industrial machinery will see tariff rates reduced from 25% to 15% through Dec. 31, 2027. The proclamation also lowers tariffs to 10% for products manufactured outside the United States that contain at least 85% U.S.-sourced steel, aluminum or copper by weight. On June 2, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security." The order states that it is U.S. policy to "promote AI innovation and security by working collaboratively with the private sector to modernize government and private sector information systems and harden them against external threats; to protect American ingenuity and intellectual property from exploitation and theft by adversaries; and to cultivate America's advanced AI-enabled capabilities." According to ASA Vice President of Advocacy Stephen Rossi, this is not the administration's first attempt to address AI policy. "This is the second version of an AI executive order that President Trump initially intended to sign last week but postponed to better address industry concerns," Rossi said. "The EO aims to strike a balance between government oversight and technological innovation."

While much of the order focuses on cybersecurity and the evaluation of advanced AI systems, it’s clear that policymakers view artificial intelligence as a strategic capability that will influence the future competitiveness of American businesses and industries.
