Copper prices are approaching record territory as uncertainty over potential U.S. tariffs on refined copper reshapes global inventories and adds another layer of pricing and supply-chain risk for PHCP-PVF businesses. Reuters reported on August 25 that three-month copper futures on the London Metal Exchange recently reached $14,343 per metric ton, putting prices within striking distance of the all-time high of $14,527.50 per metric ton. The rally is occurring even as the broader global copper market remains adequately supplied, highlighting how trade policy and the geographic location of available inventory are increasingly influencing prices.

The key distinction for the current market, however, is refined copper. Despite the Section 232 tariffs already affecting many copper products, refined copper, including cathodes, was excluded from the original tariff action. Instead, the Commerce Department recommended a phased universal tariff of 15% beginning Jan. 1, 2027 and 30% beginning Jan. 1, 2028. The July 2025 proclamation directed Commerce to provide an updated assessment of the domestic copper market by June 30, 2026 before the president determined whether those tariffs should be imposed. When Addison, Illinois-based Porter Pipe & Supply Company's Blake Kukla enrolled in ASA’s Master of Distribution Management (MDM) program, he had a straightforward goal: learn how to become a manager. The timing could hardly have worked out better. Shortly after graduating from the program, Kukla was promoted from inside sales to inside sales manager at Porter Pipe & Supply. A year and a half into the role, he is now putting those lessons into practice as he navigates moving from being responsible for his own performance to being responsible for the success of an entire team.

“I used to be worried about having a big month,” Kukla says. “Now I’m worried about what I can do to help everyone have a bigger month.”

It is a mindset shift that captures much of what has changed since Kukla entered MDM, and much of what the program helped prepare him to do. Read his full story here: https://www.asa.net/News-Media/News/from-student-to-sales-manager

Last week marked a major advocacy win for Main Street businesses. After years of advocacy, the U.S. Treasury finalized changes to the Corporate Transparency Act that permanently remove beneficial ownership information (BOI) reporting requirements for U.S. companies and U.S. persons. FinCEN will also delete previously submitted information tied to U.S. businesses and owners.

Treasury estimates the revised rule will save businesses $9 billion annually in compliance costs, while the deletion of previously collected data will affect an estimated 15 million entities.

ASA has spent five years working alongside the S-Corp Association and other coalition partners to push back against unnecessary reporting burdens, compliance costs and privacy risks.

The progress is substantial, but the work isn't finished. ASA will continue advocating for a permanent legislative solution that protects small and family-owned businesses.

The latest aggressive move from Home Depot to push further into the pro market ⬇️

The Aug. 18 announcement comes as the home improvement giant reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 sales of $47.9 billion, up 5.7% from the same period last year. Comparable sales increased 1.7% overall and 1.3% in the U.S.

The significance here extends beyond another big-box delivery option. Home Depot is increasingly competing on a service promise that has traditionally been a core advantage of local and regional distributors: getting contractors the products they need quickly enough to keep a job moving.
Home Depot’s new Express Delivery service is available across U.S. markets for a small flat fee with no membership required. The retailer is using more than 2,000 U.S. stores as local fulfillment hubs and says thousands of SKUs across plumbing, electrical, hardware, tools, paint and other project categories can be delivered within three hours. The service is available to both professional and DIY customers. In addition to its 2,364 retail stores, the company now operates more than 1,340 SRS locations following its continued investment in the professional contractor market.
