Yesterday our development team set up at Black Economic Council of MA’s Mass Black Expo, and the table stayed busy all day.

Mayor Michelle Wu Wu and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley Pressley stopped by, along with dozens of business leaders, entrepreneurs, allies, and neighbors.

Between conversations, we sat in on panels about building Black economic power in Massachusetts, and we came away with ideas, connections, and a longer list of people who want to know our young men.

Thank you to the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts for a vibrant event focused on building Black wealth, and to everyone who stopped to talk.

The final two weeks of the Summer of Growth brought everything full circle.

Week five opened with continued Climate Resiliency work before shifting into the last day of financial literacy — a milestone worth marking after weeks of deep engagement with budgeting, savings, and money management. Midweek, the cohort gathered for a sound healing session and a financial literacy focus group, creating space to reflect on what they’d learned and what it meant. The week closed on a high note with a trip to Beacon Hill for a PIC training, and the rest of us had a field day with Boston Explorers — a day in the sun before the final stretch.

Week six was about finishing strong. The cohort practiced and refined their capstone presentations, and before they took the stage, they took one more day to be young — a summer survey, a fun day, and a staff versus students hoop session that captured everything the summer built: trust, joy, and a village that shows up for each other. Then, on Thursday, they delivered. Each team presented on a community issue they’d spent weeks researching, analyzing, and building a business solution around. Weeks of work, brought into the room with clarity and purpose.

And woven through all of it — every session, every visit, every conversation — was mentorship. Consistent, intentional, intensive, and immeasurable.

Six weeks. A cohort of young men who came in one way and are leaving another. That’s the Summer of Growth.

We’re four weeks into the Summer of Growth and it’s been a summer unlike any other.

Our young men have covered serious ground — workplace communication, time management, wellness goal setting, digital literacy, financial literacy, team building, and a hands-on CPR training with Dr. Kemar Brown. They toured Boston’s African American history, visited the Boston Public Library to sharpen their research skills, and were introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu through Level Ground.

They launched a Climate Resiliency project supported by Liberty Mutual, with each team choosing a sustainability focus to develop through the summer. They’ve been building toward professional interviews, exploring careers through a skills-based survey, and constructing capstone presentations on issues that impact their communities — each closing with a business plan and a $250,000 hypothetical grant to bring their solutions to life.

This week they gave back with a community service cleanup along River Street, built out their resumes, and welcomed Councilor Worrell for a conversation that made the work feel as real as it is.

Four weeks. One cohort. A whole lot of growth. 🌱

Today is Juneteenth — a day to honor the long, uneven path to freedom in this country, and the communities who carried that history forward.

One Hundred Sixty One years ago, on June 19, 1865, word of freedom finally reached Galveston, Texas — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we honor that history and everyone who carried it forward. we hold that history close, our work exists to make sure freedom isn’t just remembered, but expanded — through mentoring, education, and now, a permanent home of our own at 1178 River Street.

At YMWAP, freedom means more than a date on the calendar. It means access. Opportunity. A future young men get to choose for themselves — and a place to build it.

We’re home. 🏠

After five years of renting space at 1178 River Street, YMWAP officially owns our building — and now we’re building everything inside it.

Make Your Mark is our call to the village. Help us raise money to grow our staff, launch new programs, and equip nearly 400 young men with what they need to build real futures.

This past Saturday, more than 30 Black men — young and seasoned alike — gave their morning to River Street.

No big ask, no hesitation. Just gloves, bags, and a block that deserves to be cared for. Watching generations show up together for the community that shaped so many of us was a reminder of why this work matters.

Thank you to every man who came out. You set an example that our young men won’t forget.
