This morning I read the story of an 11-year old girl named Esther. And how she was recently brutally r***d …

Esther and her family live in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She’s one of 9 children. She and her family are Christians.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) attacked her village this past January. They killed many, and then abducted Esther and her mother (and 3 other relatives).

They took Esther and her mother into a nearby forest, where they then sexually abused and r***d her and her mother.

Esther required much medical attention, as did her mother.

Her mother was r***d “by four men successively,” leaving her terribly wounded and her body “deformed.”

Esther and her mother credit the Lord for sparing their lives. And they’re even asking God to forgive their attackers.

I don’t think I could do that …

Did I ever share the story of how I helped the Arkansas Razorbacks football team win a game … ?

It was September 14, 2002. Arkansas was playing South Florida at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

My daughter, Katey, and I had sideline passes thanks to a connection we had (this was actually the third time I’d had the privilege of being on the sidelines for a Razorback game)…

Here’s what happened…

The first quarter ended with no score, despite Arkansas being a team that should have easily taken the lead. We just couldn’t seem to get into the end zone.

One of my all-time favorite Razorbacks was the quarterback, Matt Jones, number 9.

As the second quarter progressed, our offense struggled, and we had to punt again. Matt Jones came over to the sideline and settled into his usual spot next to the phone connecting him to the press box and the offensive coordinator.

That’s when I felt it was time to step in. Matt needed some “encouragement.”

A couple of weeks earlier, I had read an online quote from Matt Jones about perseverance and giving your all in every game. I was so inspired by his words that I made a copy and kept it in my wallet.

Now was the moment to share it with Jones. I approached him and started a conversation…

“Mr. Jones, I apologize for interrupting, but I wanted to let you know that I carry a quote by you in my wallet. It’s really motivating. Would you like to read it?”

“Sure,” he said. I handed him the quote and stood quietly as he read it. When he finished, he looked at me with a determined spark in his eyes and said, “Thanks. I’m READY now!”

I went back to my spot and watched the game. On the very next possession, Jones led his team down the field. From the 21-yard line, he took the snap and threw a pass to his left. The receiver caught it and ran into the end zone!

I was thrilled. As a matter of fact, I was so excited that I called my dad, a devoted Razorback fan who was watching the game on TV.

“Dad, did you see that touchdown pass?”

“I sure did,” he replied.

“Well, I played a part in that.”

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“I went over and had a good talk with Matt Jones. I got him all fired up.”

We shared a good laugh. Arkansas ended up winning 42-3.

Now, there’s a spiritual lesson in this…

Things seem grim right now: our economy is unstable, there are wars abroad, crime on our streets, and a lot of uncertainty. Today, nearly 100 people will take their own lives.

Despair is palpable, even among believers.

This is the perfect time to do what I did for Matt Jones: offer encouragement!

It’s the perfect time for a … quote …

And that quote can come from the Highest Source available: The Word of the Living God.

Scripture repeatedly instructs us to “encourage one another.” This is a practice we desperately need… RIGHT NOW…

So today, instead of criticizing political opponents, complaining about current difficulties, or focusing on what’s wrong, choose to use the power of your words to ENCOURAGE YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE FAITH.

Remind them of their identity in Christ.

Remind them that no matter how dark things seem, we are “children of the light.”

Remind them that even if it feels like many are against us, “they that are for us are MORE than those who are against us” (2 Kings 6).

Looking at the “scoreboard” may give you the impression that we are behind - but we are not! The fact is, we are winning. Know this: our Heavenly Father has NEVER been in a contest or conflict that He did not come out victorious.

And we are “in Him,” and because we are, we … will … triumph …

We often advise people to "Keep their eyes on Jesus, not on man," but maybe it's time to rethink this approach.

When a Christian leader stumbles morally, our immediate reaction is to say, "Keep your eyes on Jesus, not on man." Or we might say, "No one is perfect except for Jesus."

But this isn't the way it was intended to be. The reality is that people should be able to "put their eyes on you" and see a reflection of Jesus. It's not even physically [possible for them to "put their eyes on Jesus." All they can SEE is the person in front of them...

YOU ... are meant to be the closest representation of Jesus that others can see.

This concept is supported by scripture. People should be able to look at you and discern what Jesus looks like.

In Philippians 3:17, Paul writes, "Join together in following my example ... KEEP YOUR EYES ON THOSE WHO LIVE AS WE DO."

Paul doesn't stop there. He also writes in 1 Corinthians 11:1, "Imitate me, as I imitate Christ," and reinforces this in 1 Corinthians 4:16 with, "I urge you to imitate me."

In Philippians 4:9, he says, "What you have learned and received and heard and SEEN IN ME — put it into practice."

He also instructed the Thessalonians to follow his example, noting that he lived as a MODEL when he was with them.

Folks - Christianity is in crisis mode. Tons of people have abandoned the church and the faith, and it will not suffice to tell them they should not have had their eyes on men (they don't even know how to do that).

This is our time - YOUR time - to shine.

People are mocking us not because of our stand for righteousness, but because of our sinful behavior.

The Prophet Nathan rebuked King David for his adulterous act with Bathsheba - and there would be hell to pay. Though the Lord graciously forgave him, it was not without repercussions. Nathan told him that because of what he had done, he had given occasion for the Lord's enemies to blaspheme.

We have "given occasion" to those outside the faith to blaspheme the glorious name of our Lord Jesus. With our scandalous behavior, we have opened the door for non-Christians to declare that God is not real. If He is real and lives within His people, why do they act like they do?

Perhaps it's not too late to return to the condition of the Early Church. In Acts 5 we are told those outside the faith held the Christians in high esteem. As a matter of fact, we're even told that they were "afraid" to even associate with them...

When I was a freshman in college (1976), I was introduced to the writings of Leonard Ravenhill. These quotes by him are from the 1960s… but one would think they were written last night …

“Entertainment is the devil's substitute for joy. The more joy you have in the Lord the less entertainment you need.”

“The early church was married to poverty, prisons and persecutions. Today, the church is married to prosperity, personality, and popularity.”

“You can't live wrong and pray right.”

“One of these days some simple soul will pick up the book of God, read it, and believe it. Then the rest of us will be embarrassed.”

“The Church right now has more fashion than passion, is more pathetic than prophetic, is more superficial than supernatural.”

“The apostles had no gold, but lots of glory. We have lots of gold, but no glory.”

“The opportunity of a lifetime needs to be seized during the lifetime of the opportunity.”

AND … THE LAST ONE … IS …

“No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.”

Have I Ever Told You That I’m Not That Big Of A Deal … ???

In the early 90s I began to experience a lot of success in my police officer ministry - and it was growing fast.

I even had a radio show for police officers in the Dallas area. In addition, I started a Christian newspaper for police officers, called “Cop & Cross.” It was distributed across the country.

Cops from everywhere were responding…

I even got to be a guest on TBN (Christian TV) and people over the world were learning who I was.

I received invitations from pastors to come and speak at their church. People would come up to me and say, “I saw you on TV.”

It was a thrilling time. “Finally,” I thought, “I’m a success.”

I couldn’t even carry on a conversation with someone without telling them of how God was using me.

But in my heart, the glory of God was not my primary objective. In my mind, WWJD meant “What Would JIMMY Do.”

One day I got a call from the Dallas area chapter of the Full Gospel Business Men. They asked if I would be the keynote speaker at their annual Christmas banquet. “Of course,” I told them. I hung up the phone and gloated at the continual success. I was finally becoming “somebody.”

A few weeks later I headed out to speak at the Full Gospel banquet. I was excited. I LOVED preaching.

I took my place at the head table with the other VIPS. The table was on the stage. Everyone will see me up here.

Hundreds of people had been invited to the banquet - and I was beyond excited. When it came to start, we blessed the food. I looked up and stared at the crowd.

All 12 of them …

Twelve (12!) people had come to hear me. “Don’t these people know who I am?” (“I’m Bruce Almighty!)

Millions of people live in the Dallas - Ft. Worth area. Twelve of them came to hear me.

I was embarrassed. Humiliated.

And then something happened I will never forget …

A still small voice, which I think was the Voice of God, whispered to me. I remember it as if it happened last night …

“I brought you here tonight to remind you that you … are … NOT … that … big …”

I was ashamed.

God is the only one who can see our heart. And He is never impressed by a flourishing ministry.

Then, the Voice spoke again. I believed it to be the Voice of God …

“Get up from your chair, go into the kitchen and get a bowl and fill it with water. When it comes time for you to speak, don’t. Instead, wash the feet of everyone in this room.”

So I did.

Most of those in the room were elderly men. I brought each one up on the stage, removed their socks and shoes, and washed their aged feet.

I had been such a fool. I was using God to make a name for myself. I was no different than the televangelist who “uses God" to get donations. It was sickening.

There is not a believer on this earth who is indispensable. If every famous minister and believer dropped dead today, the Kingdom of God would NOT suffer in the least. It would carry on as if … nothing had happened.

You would be missed (for about 2 days).

A friend of mine, a well-known Bible teacher whose been in the ministry over 50 years, was speaking at a convention center in Dallas one night. Thousands were in the room. I watched the event on TV.

When it came time for him to speak, he stood behind the podium and wept. He couldn’t even deliver his message.

Finally, he broke his silence with these words: “I have been told that I don’t look good when I cry. But I have leaned that I can’t look good and Jesus look good at the same time.”

Yes, God loves us, but He can exist without us.

If a “Billy Graham” passes away, God will just raise up another.

And if no Billy can be found, He may speak His message through a jackass (like He did in Numbers 22:28).

When you head out into the world today, determined to “change the world for Christ,” make sure you have your towel with you.
