Since 1777, the American flag has been officially redesigned 27 times, with most changes reflecting the admission of new states into the Union.
The first Flag Act, adopted on June 14, 1777—now celebrated as Flag Day—established a flag featuring 13 stars and 13 alternating red and white stripes. Because Congress did not specify the arrangement of the stars, a variety of designs appeared during the nation's early years. As new states entered the Union, the practice of adding both stars and stripes became impractical. To solve this problem, Congress passed the Flag Act of 1818, permanently fixing the number of stripes at 13 to honor the original colonies while reserving future changes for the star field.
Under the 1818 law, each new flag design became official on the Fourth of July following a state's admission. The 49-star flag had the shortest official lifespan, flying for less than one year—from July 4, 1959, after Alaska became a state, until July 3, 1960, when Hawaii's admission required a new design.
The current 50-star flag was created by 17-year-old high school student Robert G. Heft as a class project. Adopted on July 4, 1960, it has remained unchanged ever since, making it the longest-serving flag design in American history.

Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate the American flag and all it represents—freedom, service, and the ideals our nation was founded upon. We hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on the history behind the Stars and Stripes and the generations of Americans who have proudly served under it.
