A reflection from our Executive Director:

“I’ve spent some time thinking about whether to release this or not. I’ve had numerous moments that reminded me how grateful I am for my health, for my village, and for the lessons within this journey. I was reminded that a year ago, I was in a very different space. While I was seeking support, I was also living one day at a time…and at moments, one hour at a time.

What I’ve learned since returning from medical leave is that I am not the only one. Many of my colleagues have experienced similar moments, and some have left the nonprofit sector altogether because the work has taken such a profound toll.

The nonprofit sector exists because the systems meant to support our communities have failed so many of us and our communities…Maybe it is time we rethink what we call this sector because, while we may not do this work for profit, we do this work to save lives, to change lives, and to stand in the gap for those who cannot do it alone.

It is time we begin advocating for the lives of the people who work in the nonprofit sector…The people who selflessly give so much of themselves in service to others. We cannot continue to normalize doing this work at the expense of our own well-being, and we cannot continue allowing our labor to be valued less than labor in other sectors.

Our impact is measured in human lives, not profit margins. And those of us who dedicate our lives to this work also deserve the opportunity to build stability, dignity, and generational wealth for our families. - Dr. Wilma Franco”
