Throw Away Dogs Project is an Internationally recognized Nonprofit Organization turning misunderstood dogs into trained Law Enforcement Canines. Our Organization also grants specialized training through our K9 Education Program to Law Enforcement Officers which maximizes their effectiveness in critical situations. Throw Away Dogs Project donate all of our dogs and training to Departments throughout the United States.

This serious condition occurs when muscle tissue breaks down rapidly, releasing substances into the bloodstream that can cause severe kidney damage and other life-threatening complications.

For working K9s, intense physical exertion, overheating, and certain medical conditions can increase the risk.

What many handlers may not realize is that Rhabdo is not the same as heatstroke. While heatstroke can trigger this condition, severe muscle breakdown can also occur following extreme physical exertion, even without obvious signs of overheating.

Warning signs may include muscle pain or stiffness, weakness, reluctance to move, and dark-colored urine. Suspected cases require immediate veterinary attention.

The tragic death of our beloved K9 Ender was once again part of the public conversation during a recent Dorchester County Sheriff’s candidates forum.

During the forum, Sheriff candidate Mark Lewis addressed Ender’s preventable death, stating, “𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝” Lewis also raised concerns about transparency surrounding the investigation and addressed the importance of K9 safety.

We appreciate that Ender’s death continues to be acknowledged and that important questions about accountability are being raised.

For Throw Away Dogs Project, Ender was family. His life mattered, and his death deserves more than words. It deserves answers, accountability, and meaningful changes to help ensure another K9 never suffers the same fate.

Dear People Trying to “Rehome” Their Dogs,

Let me translate something for you: your dog is not an old couch, a used refrigerator, or a pair of jeans that no longer fit your lifestyle.

It’s your DOG.

You brought them home. You made promises to them—whether you said the words out loud or not. The moment you became their person, you became their entire world. And now because you’re moving, having a baby, dating someone new, working too much, or simply decided that having a dog is “hard,” suddenly you’re posting:

“Need to rehome ASAP. Small rehoming fee.”

Really?

Imagine your dog writing a post:

“My owner got busy and annoying. Looking to rehome them immediately. Prefer someone with more time, loyalty, and common sense.”

Funny how that would sound terrible, isn’t it?

Dogs don’t understand eviction notices, relationship problems, vacations, new furniture, or your latest lifestyle change. They understand one thing: YOU.

You’re their family.

They don’t sit around thinking, “Well, Dave has been stressed lately. Perhaps it’s best if I find another human.” Nope. They wait at the door for you. They sleep beside you. They trust you completely. Even on your worst days, they’re still ridiculously happy when you come home.

And some people repay that loyalty with a Facebook post.

“FREE TO GOOD HOME. Can’t keep anymore.”

Congratulations. You just turned a family member into a Craigslist giveaway.

Before getting a dog, people should understand something important: Dogs are a lifetime commitment, not a subscription you cancel when life becomes inconvenient.

Yes, life happens. Genuine emergencies and truly unavoidable circumstances can happen, and nobody should be cruel to someone facing a real crisis. But “I don’t have time anymore” shouldn’t be the first excuse—it should be the moment you ask yourself why you made a lifelong commitment in the first place.

Your dog would never abandon you because you got old.

Your dog wouldn’t leave because you gained weight.

Your dog wouldn’t trade you in because you became inconvenient.

Your dog would stay.

Maybe we should try being half as loyal as they are.

So before you decide to “rehome” your dog because life got complicated, look into those eyes and remember:

To them, you aren’t just their owner.

You are their whole world.

Don’t be the reason their whole world disappears.

K9 Freddy was unexpectedly diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and served the Havelock Police Department as a patrol and narcotics detection K9. He protected his community, but most importantly, he protected the man beside him every day.

Jason gave us permission to share this very personal moment. With Freddy’s ashes and favorite toys beside him in the patrol car, Jason listens as his partner receives his final radio call. It is absolutely heartbreaking. 💔
