While we don't know the circumstances surrounding this particular incident, it serves as an important reminder about the dangers of wandering (also known as elopement) and the critical importance of water safety.

Many people are surprised to learn that some autistic individuals may wander from a safe environment, often very quickly and without warning. This can happen even when loving, attentive caregivers have taken precautions to secure their homes and create safe spaces.

𝑾𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒖𝒍𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒐𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈—it is a safety risk associated with autism that many families work hard to prevent every day.

Water can be especially dangerous because many autistic individuals are naturally drawn to it. Ponds, pools, creeks, retention basins, and other bodies of water are often among the first places first responders are encouraged to check when a child is reported missing.

Stories like this remind us why awareness, prevention, education, and community understanding matter.

💡 A little knowledge can save a life. If you know a family affected by autism, take a moment to learn about wandering, water safety, and ways to support families in keeping their loved ones safe.

Our Lollipop Ring Toss was a big hit with the kids!

Don't forget to think beyond the traditional emergency kit.

Consider an personalized emergency kit that includes:

✅ Medications and copies of prescriptions
✅ Comfort items or favorite toys
✅ Noise-canceling headphones or ear protection
✅ Fidgets and sensory supports
✅ Preferred snacks and drinks
✅ Visual schedules, social stories, or communication tools
✅ Chargers for devices and AAC equipment
✅ Extra batteries
✅ Change of clothes and comfort items
✅ Medical and emergency contact information
✅ Identification and recent photos
✅ A list of triggers, calming strategies, and support needs

💡 If evacuation becomes necessary, having familiar items and supports readily available can help reduce anxiety and provide comfort during an uncertain time.

The time to prepare is now—before a storm is on the way.
