Last April, 10 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty. The cause breakdown (April 2026 only) is: six by gunfire, three automobile crashes, and one vehicular assault. This means that as of April 30th, the year-to-date total for line of duty deaths was 36, a 0% increase over the same period last year.

The Officer Down Memorial Page extends our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and agencies who lost a loved one to a line of duty death this past month. Today, while many families gathered around grills, cooked hot dogs, spent time on the water, and enjoyed a long weekend… it’s important to remember what Memorial Day truly means.

Today was never meant to just be another holiday.
It was meant to be a day of remembrance. A day of mourning. A day to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives serving this country so the rest of us could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

Behind every flag placed at a cemetery, every folded flag handed to a family, and every name etched on a memorial wall is a story… a son, daughter, mother, father, husband, wife, or friend who never made it home.

While many celebrated today, countless families spent the day remembering the empty seat at their table and carrying a pain that never truly goes away.

So tonight, before the weekend ends, take a moment to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Honor the fallen. Pray for their families. And never forget that freedom comes at a cost many were willing to pay with their lives.
