Florida Memory has partnered once again with the Florida History Day office to host a webinar about this year’s History Day competition. Please join us on October 26, 2026, at 4pm to talk about this year’s theme and resources for helping students prepare for History Day. Here is the registration link: https://dos-myflorida.zoom.us/meeting/register/UL3U2pmvTtmJ5KRf9V5_7g #/registration

Florida Memory also has a webpage with potential topics and primary sources. https://floridamemory.com/learn/classroom/history-day/

Finally, they've launched the Florida Memory Timeline Challenge! Based on the 4-12th grade social studies standards, Florida Memory Timeline Challenge is a digital interactive that invites students to place historical events, figures, and documents in their correct chronological order. By sequencing key events in Florida and U.S. history, students begin to map connections between historical events and place events within their broader context. The Timeline Challenge features a built-in report card function that allows students to track their progress and provide insight into their mastery of certain subjects and state standards.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute Selects Melanie Hendrix as 2026 Florida History Teacher of the Year!

Melanie Hendrix, a teacher at Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola, has been named the 2026 Florida History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

The annual recognition program, presented by the Gilder Lehrman Institute—the nation’s leading nonprofit for K–12 American history education—celebrates one outstanding teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools, and U.S. Territories. It recognizes educators for their dedication, creativity, and effective use of primary sources. Nominees are recommended by students, colleagues, or school leaders and selected by state committees of historians and educators.

A veteran educator with 33 years of experience, Melanie Hendrix currently teaches AP U.S. History, as well as honors and regular U.S. History courses. She also serves as the sponsor for the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. She acts as an ambassador for Founding Forward, Retro Report, and the Truman Library Teacher Institute.

“Mrs. Hendrix is a vital asset to the Escambia County Public Schools social studies team, consistently bringing American history to life for her students through innovative and engaging projects,” said Cherie Arnette, Social Studies Curriculum Specialist for ECPS.

As the 2026 Florida History Teacher of the Year, Hendrix will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a curated collection of American history books and educational materials from the Gilder Lehrman Institute, and recognition at a local ceremony. They will also join 52 other honorees as a finalist for the 2026 National History Teacher of the Year Award.

The national winner will be announced this fall at a special ceremony at the Harvard Club of New York City and will receive a $10,000 grand prize.
