Urban Healing HTX

Urban Healing HTX The Louis White Building is a certified historical landmark in the 5th Ward of Houston, TX. It is now being restored as an event center to serve the community.

It long served as the center of the community as a grocery store owned by Louis & Elnora White. Our mission is to connect, engage, and empower the Fifth Ward community of Houston. As a minority women-led nonprofit, we are dedicated to ensuring access to resources and support for this underprivileged community. By revitalizing the historic Louis White Grocery Store, we aim to remove location barriers that prevent other nonprofits from reaching the community, providing a hub for essential services and opportunities

The Louis White building has been formally nominated for consideration to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Texas Historical Commission has determined that the nomination is valid and will present it to the State Board of Review for consideration on September 19. If approved, the property will move forward in the process toward receiving national historic recognition.

History doesn’t disappear just because it has been forgotten, it waits to be uncovered. Preserving the stories that have been buried restores voices, honors those who came before us and helps future generations understand the foundations that shaped their communities. When we protect hidden history, we ensure that truth is remembered rather than lost to time.

We’re often told that before you can rebuild, you have to destroy. I don’t believe that to necessarily always be true. Sometimes the greatest transformation comes from preserving what’s worth saving, strengthening what time has weakened and breathing new life into something that still has purpose.
Anyone can demolish. It takes vision to restore.
