We are very excited to share that our community garden was awarded a $500 local grant from Walmart Houghton to cover some of the expenses for this year’s school garden project!

It has been more than 16 years since we started this project, and we have had over 400 fourth grade students participate in it!

This is a 13-month program that brings the class to the garden at planting and harvest time and is finished with a harvest lunch that introduces students to organically grown vegetables and herbs that have been all produced in the school garden. During the summer, all of the food produced in this garden is donated to different organizations.

We have just two classes left!

Have you already planted your garden? Do you want your plants to do the best they can do during our cool summer? Do you want to learn some tricks on how to maintain your tomatoes so you don’t end up with just green tomatoes in the end of September?

If your answer was YES to any of these questions, you can join us for the next UP Gardening class next Wednesday, June 24 at 5:30 at Pewabic Street Community Garden. The registration form is below.

This six-class series is made possible by a generous grant from the Keweenaw Community Foundation. All six classes focus on teaching practical gardening skills through a hands-on, workshop-style approach. Classes are designed specifically for the challenging northern climate of Houghton and Keweenaw...

Our program today was so inspiring with Elena Busova, the Director of Pewabic Street Community Garden in the city of Houghton. The gardens have a right history, originally they were self-funded which was expensive for materials and soil. During the first years the gardens were grown together and the produce was donated to Omega House. After a few years, the gardens were expanded to 7 large beds, allowing the garden to be split into individual plots that could be assigned. But there were still challenges in improvements and maintenance and a group of board members and volunteers started writing grants and were able to fund 6 more raised beds and an irrigation system. Three of the 6 beds are part of a successful school garden project, where students first visit in September to learn about the garden and then return to plant in spring. Produce goes to the school's food giveaway program as well as the food bank and Omega House. Pewabic Community Gardens is still growing the organization, for example, consulting with local families on how to garden at their own homes. Another example is hosting field trips and group tours to spread knowledge and awareness about gardening. They are also working to make the garden more sustainable, including receiving status as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, which provides more options for fundraising and applying for grants. Last fall one of the board members applied for grant and got funds from the Keweenaw Community Foundation that funds a pilot program for gardening classes. Currently the gardens have a wait list of 16-20 people, so communicating with the city Houghton to explore possible solutions. Volunteering is always a good way to start learning!

Last Wednesday the fourth graders from Houghton Elementary planted the three school garden plots at the community garden. As always, this was one of the most exciting days of the season and the students and volunteers had a great time!

This program has been going on for more than 16 years and has helped teach students about plants, gardening, healthy food choices, pollinators and much more!

Thanks to all the volunteers who made this possible!
