On October 28, 1890, the crew of the U.S.S. Charleston staged an amateur show at Honolulu’s opera house. The audience included King Kalākaua, Vice Chamberlain Robertson, Admiral Brown, and John A. Cummins.
The first half of the program featured choruses, ballads, and comic songs. The Daily Bulletin praised the event, noting, “The performance taken as a whole, was a credit to the Charleston’s crew. Mr. F. Meredith and Jos Brown were singled out for their excellent dance numbers.”
A few weeks later, King Kalākaua departed for California aboard the Charleston. The photograph of him on the ship (pictured) is believed to be the last taken before his death in January 1891. His body was also returned to Hawaiʻi on the Charleston, bringing the King home one final time.
